I used to enjoy shopping on Black Friday. Not anymore. It is too crazy and for the last couple of years too much to even consider with my son in tow. I used to go with my parents and sister, we would get some of the early deals, go out for breakfast and then catch some of the specials designed to bring people back in the store after the Early Birds were gone. We'd be home by lunch and relax the rest of the day. Even then the only store I stood in line in front of was one we were wrong about the opening time and it was our last "early bird" place so we really did not have anywhere else we wanted to go until later. Once Black Friday special I do wish I had heard about in time to try for was a portable DVD player at Radio Shack a few years ago. At the time we had a DVR and hardly ever watched commercials. I saw it a few days later! The only reason I would have tried that one is that we have a Radio Shack literally 5 minutes away and I wouldn't have been out much if I couldn't get it.

I have only been shopping on Black Friday once....that was 22 years ago. I will never do it again.
The savings are not worth my time (you have to be there so early to get some of them) and not worth the hassle of dealing with tired cranky greedy people.

Maybe online but not in person. Now sometimes I do go in the afternoon when people start getting exhausted but probably not this year.
People line up all day thanksgiving. No thanks, the fights and getting trampled aren't worth it. People got shot and killed last year.

I do it online at the crack of dawn, or Thanksgiving day if possible. I will go out after the morning crowds are gone...
I *might* brave Joann's this year for some $1.5 a year flannel.

When I was going, the early specials were more like 7 am. I have yet to meet a sale that is worth being ANYWHERE at 4 am! But the nonsense that is going on these days with people rushing stores, trampling others etc. is just scary. I refuse to be a party to that in any way, shape or form. Last year I needed to do some shopping that weekend and went early on Sat. to Lane Bryant and Kohls. I was waiting for Mark to finish up at karate so I hit Best Buy and got some really good deals on DVDs for us and as gifts. Same special they ran on Black Friday, most of the movies were still in stock and no insanity. Win all around. But I refuse to be tied to any single purchase to the extent that it risks life and limb to get it. I'll either find something else, wait for another sale or just do without it. Even when we were kids we knew that our parents would try to get us the "hot toy" (if we wanted it and it was within their budget) but they were not standing in line all day or paying exorbitant prices for it.

The only time I've ever ventured out on Black Friday was to a nearby Walgreens that I knew would probably not be crowded to get a couple of $5 DVDs. There was only a handful of people in there, it was nice.
I like to online shop though.

I did the Black Friday thing once a few years ago. Someone will need to be on a deathbed to get me to do it again.
Despite the recent couponing, I've never been much of a shopper and I really don't like crowds. I didn't expect there to be so many people at Best Buy that early in the morning.
It took me all of 15 minutes to find my purchases. I was in line to buy them for 4 hours. I can't even remember everything that I bought, but I believe I had to return some of it because it wasn't compatible with my computer.
The main thing I remember about that day was the line. It was funny, though. There happened to be an office chair near where I joined the line so I grabbed it and rolled my way to the cashier. The only thing that would have made it less traumatic would have been if I'd discovered the books before I got in line instead of 3 hours in.

Nope. As it been said most sale are way too early. Besides the bus that goes to the shopping centers does not run that early and since my main transportation is the bus...I cannot stand crowds the "deals" are not worth the crowds.

I went last year with a close friend (she called me at 11 pm Thanksgiving night and picked me up at 4 am)
It was a lot of fun actually, we brought hot chocolate and bundled up. I was home by 7 in the morning with all of my Christmas shopping done, although I'm pretty sure she went out again later on in the day.

It is a fun thing that I do with my sisters and my mom (if they are around). Before my sisters lived around us, I would go with a friend. We get coffee and just have fun. (My Walmart just redid their store and added a Dunkin Donuts - so this year will be great!)
However, there is NOTHING on a MUST HAVE list. We get the paper on Thanksgiving, go through the ads and match it up w/ what's on the family Christmas list. (It's much, much smaller this year because of my husband's unemployment). Our Walmart is normally not crowded and the lines are very short! I DO NOT go to Best Buy or Toy's R US. My favorite places are Michael's and AC Moore, because they normally have the best deals on scrapbooking supplies, educational toys, and creative toys. They do run specials from 5-9am that pretty much are not repeated the rest of the year. (Unlike Walmart that will re-introduce their stock right before Christmas at the same price.) Target runs a 2 day add, so if there is something that I want, I wait until Saturday. The problem with Target is that they don't get many of what is on sale and they often don't stock between the two days. All in all, I just consider it a fun morning out w/ my sisters!

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I'm more apt to do when it's the year Mom & I spend Thanksgiving in Seattle. The best time is while almost everyone else is lined up on the streets to watch the parade!

It is one of the few days off I get from work. I will sleep in, get up about 9ish, and if it isn't raining (usually isn't in the desert) I'll get on my cold weather kit, put on my new 4x leather gloves and a cap and helmet and go for a nice bicycle ride. I'll come back home and recover with some turkey and take a nap before a football game of my liking comes on. Then at sundown...

I voted "other" since I'm from Canada; since our Thanksgiving is not the same day we don't have these specials.
However, we were planning a trip to northern US that weekend, and I've just realized we'd be arriving on Black Friday. We were planning on doing some shopping. If we get there around 2 pm, will the malls still be jam-packed? Will everything be picked clean by the time Saturday rolls around (making it pointless to shop on Sat or Sun)? Or is it like any other sale?

It varies from place to place of course, but it should be settled down by 2pm. Still busy, but not a madhouse. The stuff that will be gone will be the higher end stuff (electronics and the like) and maybe some of the more popular toys. That is what they usually have on the really cheap sales first thing in the morning - basically to suck you in the door and spend tons of money on other junk you didn't need or want, even if you didn't get the "great deal" you came for. Everybody will have sales that continue into the weekend on most of the same items that are on sale on Friday but you'll have fewer crowds and a lot less insanity. I was in Best Buy (electronics store, don't know if you have them)last year on that Sat at something like 10:30 (I think, I had gone to another store and needed to kill time) and got some great prices on DVDs - the same sale that started Fri. when they opened. I have no idea what big ticket stuff they had on Friday morning, but what I wanted was still there and on sale. I don't do much shopping that weekend at all anymore but I am nearly always able to get what I want on sale any time that weekend.

It is a toss up vacation wise. Mark never has it off. But a lot of places don't bother opening up just for one day.

Jen, you should be ok by 2pm. I went after work last year, we went around 2:30 and stores were actually pretty deserted. Clothing shouldn't be that picked over, there was plenty to choose from last year.

Depends on the employment. If its an office environment most people have requested the day off. Many people work a half day or get sent home early and some call in sick.
If I go I go in the afternoon and it is tolerable. The food court and restaurants will be full that day so be prepared.

Black Friday Ads are out -- do you shop then? - 
MARRIED TO A MILITARY PILOT 
PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR TROOPS! 
Mart on that day, unless they sell out of the item, they'll still have it and be slashing prices on it until after the new year. 
If he doesn't have to work and there are enough good deals he will go shopping anyway. (Shopping is in the same town as work, a 30 minute drive, so it has to be worth driving for and worth getting up early for.)
