Thinking about buying my husband a saw, and wondering what brand to get. My husband doesn't like building things and will only use it a few times a year to cut the occasional piece of wood. Is black & decker ok?

Black and Decker is fine. If you want a warranty, get a Craftsman at Sears. Many of the B & D's have to be taken or sent to an authorized service center. During the warranty period, you can take the Craftsman to Sears. If he is not journeyman builder, stay away from all the fancy gizmos like laser guides (unless streight lines are hard to come by). I have a circular and an worm gear drive that have lasted for years on construction. I have a radial arm saw that is at least 40 years old and working fine (another Craftsman). Last year bought a compound miter saw for re doing the molding in the house by the same name, no problems. So find out what they are going to be cutting and buy the saw that will work the best for the situation you are involved in. Be safe, I have seen more hands with missing fingers due to saw misuse.

Black and Decker nor Sears brands is worth the money and will fail within the first few uses. That's odd, my father had a Craftsman circular saw that he used for 30 years. Same with his miter saw and a couple of jig saws. My grandfather, a master mechanic and all around Mr. Fixit swore by Craftsman. I've had the same Black & Decker hand drill for 25 years and it works fine for the two or three times a year I need it. And the brands you name won't just "cost more", they're at least double or triple the price of the Craftsman. For an occasional user it would be like buying a Mercedes to drive two blocks to church on Sunday.

Craftsman and Black and Decker have steadily lost their quality from the years your grandfather and father owned them. I have a Craftsman 1/2" drill I bought in a yard sale that was at least 20 years old when I bought it 20 years ago. It was built like a champ and still works today. Not so with today's version of Craftsman or Black and Decker. They are garbage and not worth a penny's investment. Buy DeWalt, Milwaukee, Porter-Cable, or even Makita. You can find them at Sears too, with the better tools...
