Someone on another homeschool board I frequent posted this link to a Fox affiliate news segment on homeschooling. It really does a nice job of shooting down the socialization myths surrounding homeschooling and gives a very positive impression of the homeschooling experience: http://www.foxcharlotte.com/dpp/news/education/home_school_111709. I thought some here would enjoy seeing it as well.

The link did not work to take me to the story, but it did take me to the Fox News site for that station. I clicked on the home page link, then scrolled down and found the story. Thanks for sharing this! My daughter and I have been talking about these aspects of homeschooling and public schooling... how teachers say, "You are not here to socialize" in public school but then when kids are homeschooled, we are asked how they socialize. Kinda funny.

Rats, you're right. The link doesn't take you to the actual page for some reason. If you want to view it, you just go to the home page and then scroll down to the area under 'Education.' The title of the segment is "Do Homeschoolers Get What They Need?"

Here it is. The story must have moved.

Of course kids socialize in school, but a lot of it is negative socialization. One of the reasons we homeschool is to keep the kids out of that kind of social setting. That was a pretty good clip.

I totally agree with you, cynthia. We brought our dd home after she finished second grade in public school and negative socialization was the main reason! There was a group of girls that dominated her whole day, with nothing but constant drama. The focus was so much on the class group, the girls, the behavior issues, etc. that the main purpose of attending school was lost in the mix. We wanted her to have a good education primarily -- not an immersion in American pop culture and worldly ways. Another important issue was that we wanted to be able to include our faith in her studies so she could have what we consider a complete education. This is our third year of hs'ing and we have never looked back. Dd is in a small co-op for science, plays soccer, attends an art class with other hs kids, goes to science and day camps in the summer, is involved in church youth activities and spends plenty of time playing with friends and her cousins. She is certainly not deprived, and there is very little drama in her life these days. :~)
