I didn't like the first two Narnia films either, but at least this one won't have a big Lord of the Rings style battle scene in it. Those were getting kind of tiring.

Anyway, the only Narnia book I really want to see made into a film is The Magician's Nephew. I don't really care about the rest.

They're mentioned briefly in the book, so I'm sure their presence in the movie with be just as brief.

I'm with heathjack on this one. I found the orginal movie boring. This story as told was for its time I think, just like the cardboard, wooden Ten Commandments were for some of the 1950's or 60's crowd who might have been awed by thee's and thou's. Sometimes movie-makers make movies for their own generation. Stories need to be retold in relevant and challenging ways. Some people have gotten over talking lions as metaphors/personifications. Stale.

Henny, where is the Blake quote from? What was his intended meaning?

As for LOTR, get an ext version where you can listen to the writers commentaries. It's fascinating.

I hope so.

In the book, Peter is already on the way to stay with Professor Kirke. And Susan's traveling to America with Mr. and Mrs. Pevensie. So, yeah, they're mentioned, but they don't really appear.

Perhaps the clip shown in the preview is really a flashback. I hope.

Do you see that as the films' fault... or the fault of C. S. Lewis?

Elena1030;

I don't know that it's a question of fault if some are favourably impressed by the movie (faithful or not to the book, I don't know since I haven't read it) and looking forward to a sequel. I didn't know anything about it before watching it. I rented it out of curiousity due to its publicity as a Christian allegory, hoping that it would engage me somehow. I found it to be distant and boring.

It's the same way for me with Lord of the Rings. I rented that and watched for about twenty minutes before turning it off. I suppose I'm just not into fantasy stuff with weird talking animals and the like unless it's written really funny. All that overly-serious, stilted dialogue, bearded, martial arts stuff . . . . yawn. Like I'm supposed to take it all seriously. It's like I'm in a silly Spinal Tap sequence with bad dialogue about some Druids or something. Like they want to tell me in a deep and sonorous way about "the dawn of something" or other, "the legend begins". Who cares? I'm not seventeen anymore.

Ah... I see what you mean.

If you're not into the books and you don't like this area of the sci-fi/fantasy/fairy tale genre, then it makes sense that you wouldn't like TCoN moves or LotR.

I'd tell you to read the books, but if the type of story doesn't appeal to you, then it seems unlikely to me that you'd like them... either series. (Even if it would be worthwhile b/c the writers, Lewis and Tolkien, were Christians -- expanding one's exposure to the components of the "canon" of Christian classics.)

I do agree with you that this:

quote:

Like they want to tell me in a deep and sonorous way about "the dawn of something" or other, "the legend begins".

is a rather condescending way to market a movie that's meant to be taken somewhat seriously.

However, take into account that Dawn Treader is the name of the ship... and also alludes to the fact that the voyage that Caspian and company are embarking on are to seek the end/edge of the world (their world may or may not be round, as ours is). It's not about the dawn of a new era or some sort of impressive thing... even though the marketing of the film might make you think so.

I didn't want to leave the impression that I thought the Dawn Treader trailer was condescending. I haven't seen it. I've only just learned of the movie in this thread. I was writing generally about a certain type of movie and trailer.

I don't think I'll read the books, however classic they are to others. I think allegories can be clever ways of introducing the uninitiated into something new for them, or for learning how to become skilful this way as a writer, but I prefer the original narrative as presented in scripture. I've yet to see it portrayed in a movie without wooden dialogue. It's like the movie Kingdom of Heaven. Great visuals, but everyone seems to be giving speeches or homilies to one another about every time they open their mouths. Oh, so overly-earnest and stultifying.

heath, I greatly enjoyed the second Narnia film, Prince Caspian, more than the first. I found that the first film lagged a bit at times and was set in a more dreary environment. I still enjoyed it for the characters, but found that Prince Caspian was a more exciting (multiple big battles), emotional (a love story component, one about faith, and a part consisting of honor and courage), and fun film (I couldn't resist those cute little talking animals like the mouse...they were hilarious....and the physical backdrop and everything else was on a grander scale). I think you might like Prince Caspian if you gave it a try. It really felt like a different type of movie to me. It was more intense and fun. The kids are also a bit older, which you may find more appealing (if the first film happened to feel too childlike for you).

The previews and special effects for the Dawn Treader did look great as well. I'm excited!

The "love story" (or flirtation) between Prince Caspian and Susan is not in the book, and I was disappointed that it was added to the film. Totally unnecessary to the film.

There is a bit of a love story in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (book), and I'm looking forward to seeing how the film adaptation presents it.

Prince Caspian was the dullest book in the series. I think they had to add to it to make it worth filming.

I can't wait until they get to some of the later books in the series. The last four books are my favorites.

I agree, in that Price Caspian is my least favorite book in the series. However, there were many deep and interesting themes in the book that got short-changed for that enormously stupid battle at the castle.

The film series so far has had enormous problems and I'll be pleasantly surprised if they make all seven books into films any time in the near future:

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe: Was somewhat faithful to the book, although it's production value was relatively atrocious. Generally bad acting (although not as bad as the old BBC production); stiff, wooden feel; much too cartoon-ish than the story deserved.

Prince Caspian: Much less faithful to the book than TLtWatW, but much better production. Better directing; better acting; not quite as cartoon-ish. The casting of Ben Barnes as Caspian was horrible beyond belief (what was with that accent?); The "love story" between Caspian and Susan was more than a little creepy; The power struggle b/t Caspian and Peter was totally useless and took up valuable screen time that could have been spent developing some of the other themes in the book.

Voyage of the Dawn Treader is one of my favorite book in the series but I have serious concerns raised by the trailer that, despite the change in film makers, they are going to screw this one up as well:

1) The appearance of the White Witch (I think they quickly figured out that Tilda Swinton is the best actor anywhere near these films so far, so they want her to make an appearance in this movie at all cost - plus they feel the need to put a face on the enemy, even though there really isn't any particular enemy in this book; the journey is the story).
2) The suggestion that the fate of Narnia somehow hangs on the result of this voyage.
3) The appearance of that same minotaur from the previous films (it's even the same actor, apparently), what's he doing on the ship?
4) The shot of a battle scene involving a faun (there aren't any battle scenes in the book, and no fauns either).
5) Several scenes in the trailer share the previous films' cartoon feel/texture (it just doesn't feel like a real world).

I am sure that Prince Caspian bombed at the box office because word quickly got out about the extent to which primary themes in the story were changed (that, and the producers spent an ungodly amount of money on the movie - watch the special features on the DVD, they could never hope to make it back). I'm afraid that Walden media doesn't understand their previous failure, and so they are about to repeat it.

Don't get me wrong, I will probably go see this film, and I hope that it's as great as it could be. I'm just not holding out much hope right now.

Narsil, I think you very well could be right that they will have messed with the plot. The problem with Voyage of the Dawn Treader (the book) is that it really doesn't have much of a plot. They go from adventure to adventure looking for the lost lords on the seven islands. And you have the redemption of Eustace, and then they see the end of the world. The end. There were a lot of books written back then that were more of a collection of adventures stories than one strong story, and just about anytime they are made into a movie, they re-work it to have a plot.

And they're likely minimizing the arc of Aslan's role in all of the stories.

I'd like to see The Last Battle done really well. But... Hollywood wants to focus on the battle stuff too much, which is rather not the point in the Narnia books. The relationship with Aslan IS the point (plus, the lessons the kids learn by being with Him and from Him). And it's not surprising that the producers either don't get that... or won't let it be translated onto/into film.

I disagree. I think Voyage has one of the best plots of the whole series. Of course, I enjoy complicated Shakespeare-esque writing that interweaves multiple plot lines into and around each other creating tension and release as they approach and diverge. What I enjoy most about Voyage is that it keeps your attention right up to the very end because you don't know what is going to happen. With Wardrobe, Caspian, and others there's a definite resolution period where no new information is added to the story and it just plays out...more or less. There is a certain sense of finality to Voyage once they finally discover the fate of the final lord, but there is still plenty of action to keep the pages turning and you wondering what's going to happen.

I didn't know that 150 million in the US qualifies as a "bomb".
