Hi I was wondering if anyone on the boards has an aqaurium. I started out with a half gallon for a beta and then moved him up to a 10 gallon but all the space made him spaz out so I got him a 5 gallon. He passed though before he had the chance to enjoy it. I then purchased four fancy goldfish a blackmoore who died the next day, a calico ryukiin, a oranda and I think a fantail could be another ryukin only he's orange/gold and white. I plan on moving them to a much larger 125 gallon tank very soon. I think I'm going to add a few other fish to that one too but I'm not sure what kind just yet. Maybe some more goldfish but they grow pretty big and I don't want to overcrowd them. I've read they need 30gallons for one and then 10gallons for each additional.

We have an aquarium and a "fish tank" outside. Started with a turtle and an algae-eater in a 10 gallon aquarium. Was given a gold fish. Everyone said the turtle would eat the goldfish, but instead he was scared of it. Later I moved them all outside. Turtle disappeared, goldfish grew to around 10" long, algae-eater almost as long. They were too big to bring in for the winter so left them outside with a tank heater. The goldfish died the next summer, so moved the algae eater back into the house and 10 gallon tank. The algae-eater was too big for the 10 gallon tank--could barely turn around and was also lonely (wouldn't eat, looked "sad"), so we bought a 30 gallon tank and a few "friends". algae-eater is too big for the 30 gallon tank also, but I'm not going bigger. My son's father (non-custodial) let my son buy a second turtle (did NOT ask me), so we put it in the stock tank where we'd had other one and fish. Bought some "feeder" goldfish and minnows to eat the mosquito larvae, figuring could buy more as they were eaten. Turtle was not interested in eating fish, though he LOVED snail. Turtle got out of the tank during a rainy period and disappeared. We now have 6 large goldfish and a minnow in the outside tank.

Thanks for checking this thread out. Great story. I wonder where the turtles went off too. LOL

I love aquariums, but at this point I am NOT motivated to do all the work it takes to have one and maintain one.

We had a 20 gallon aquarium in the 70's and 80's. Some of the fish had babies and then some of the fish ate the babies. We had to separate them. That was not something I wish to see again. I don't remember what kind of fish we had in there, but I think no one wanted to take care of it which is why we don't have it anymore, plus we'd go on vacation for a week and someone had to feed the fish. It was relaxing to watch them though but not when they were eating each other! LOL

Hey ~ I love aquariums and have had a number of them. I just love those little fishie worlds and watching them...love going to big aquariums and can watch the fish for hours. I have had fancy goldfish, wild fish, and tropicals. I'm kinda thinking about starting up another one....I don't have one right now because I just moved a very long distance and gave my fish away. Too much stress for them. My dream would be to have a pond outside...a good sized one...with fish, frogs, whatever and water lilies.....I also really enjoy the dragonflies and other insects (not msquites ) that come around to the water too. Aquariums are great!

Who knew it would take so much?!!!!! These little guys are wearing me out. LOL Yeah the parents will eat them if you let them. Not something I would want to see either. EW! I use to think I would want fish in a pond when I got a house but I am currently rethinking most of those thoughts.

I used to have fish, started out with a fish bowl and two goldfish my sister got me. A week or so later they died, and their floating bodies were left in the bowl for a few weeks (I wouldn't go near them, I was 10-11 years old and their eerie stillness and opaque dead eyes seriously creeped me out, especially at night.) Next tank was a ten gallon aquarium. Almost EVERYTHING that was put in it, died. Little frogs, big bettas, goldfish, mollies, algae eaters. My brother and his family gave me their pet fish, a big black goldfish. It had been around for several years, but a month or so after it was placed in there, it died. Mollies that I got who went and had babies, also died, the babies along with their mothers. So many fish died, my stepfather in his quirky sense of humor, started calling me the Fish Hitler. I tried testing the water for heavy metals, putting in chemicals for Ph, using water that was bottled (we had well water). I tried everything I could think of. Eventually I gave up. I felt that I was simply really bad with fish, and hated that in buying them, I essentially signed their death warrent. I stopped buying fish, and gave the aquarium to my brother and his family. Later, I found out from my sister in law (married to the one who gave me his black fish) that they had tried to use the 10 gallon aquarium I gave them. Everything that was homed in that tank died, even frogs and lizards. I was astonished and happy. It wasn't ME that had been killing the fish, it was that tank. I don't think that I will own fish for a long while anyway, but it was nice to know.

I will speak from the experience of an icthyophile and someone who has worked in a pet store. For those people who have had trouble keeping fish - you must keep in mind that fish are not like other pets like cats and dogs that you can just leave to hang around you just exist. If you want to keep fish in an aquarium, you first have to realize that not all fish can live in the same water. Yeah, it's obvious that saltwater fish do not thrive in fresh water, and vice versa. But what most people do not know is that a great number of fish do not do well unless they are living in a specific kind of water. But don't worry, it is not as complicated as it might seem. If you can go to a reputable fish store, it is easy to obtain information about how to treat the water depending on the kind of fish you want to keep. For example there are certain fish that do well in a new tank. There are other, more numerous fish that do not. Every fish tank has to go through a Nitrogen Cycle, which will have a lot to do in respect to the kind of fish you can have. Some fish do not thrive in a cycling tank. In fact, there are many that will die as a result. The key is to start with the right fish, then move on to what you really want. Remember that to these fish, you are essentialy the creator. No, you are not God, but it is you who will decide what kind of water, and what quality of water the fish will live in. I cannot stress enough the importance of this. The fish you might acquire come from different parts of the world. And those different parts can have very different types of water. For example, Neon Tetras are very popular. Their bright, irridescent blue and red colors entice many aquarium enthusiasts. Yet they are a very sensitve fish, and die very easily if the PH of the water is not just right. On the other side of the spectrum you have Mollies, and if you cannot keep them alive, then either you need to pay closer attention or just avoid having children. In all seriousness, keeping fish is a serious business. You just cannot put them in a tank and expect everything to work itself out. Not that I like to give out plugs, but if you really want ot be successful at keepig fish in a aquarium, pick up a book like Dr. Axelrod's. I do not have a copy myself, but I have read through it. And there is a lot of good info in it with regards to what kind of fish do best in which kinds of water. Which leads me to tell you this. If you are serious about keeping fish in a tank in your home, then you must, you must invest in a kit that will help you test your water on a regular basis. That way you will know if your water comes close to your fish's natural habitiat, which in turn will help them to thrive. And of course, if you do not have adequet living conditions for your pets... It can be like leaving a dog out in the yard during a blizzard. Me personally, I like a little challenge. All of the fish in my tank here at home live in a 55 gallon tank. They all also share the distinction of being catfish. Yes, all my fish are catfish. And they come from all over the world. South America, North America, Asia and Africa. Then again it might be that I am obsessed...

I think birds come and eat the fish in those outdoor ponds, btw. Good luck!
