After my experience with Ubuntu 8.10, I could not wait for 9.04 to fix all of its bugs. At that time I decided "no more x.10 Ubuntu releases". But after reading about some of the features and bug fixes included in 9.10, I decided to go ahead and upgrade one of my non-mission-critical desktops at work. I will leave my main machine (and thus mission-critical) on Ubuntu 9.04 for the interim.

I really like the visual updates. Yeah, I know that the visuals are not substantive, but I still like them. I like the fact that I got Firefox 3.5.4 out of the box with the install. That was pleasing.

During the upgrade, I noticed the installer decided to remove a few "obsolete" packages without offering alternatives, or later versions. I don't necessarily like that but nothing was so critical that reinstalling the later version would not make me happy. This was probably done to prevent version mismatch nightmares for synaptic.

I have not tried anything with the Ubuntu One service so I have no comments.

The only settings I "lost" were the mods I made to gdm for launching synergy client. But that was a 1 minute fix.

Anyone else have any experience with this latest release?

Ok, I am going to download it now; I have been waiting for ages for this release. Can't believe I missed it.

Started to install it Sunday eve. Apparently did something wrong and it started to overwrite my fresh install of Win7.

Backed out fast and had to rebuild the Win7 directory system with chkdsk.

And why is this bad thing?

Sounds like something my son said....

I think he will do the install when he has time... if he has time...

The update to 9.10 was the smoothest thus far (I started with 8.04). Everything worked without waiting for further updates.

My Ubuntu install is on a try boot laptop with WinXP, Ubuntu and eComstation (OS/2). When installing I had to make sure the Grub was installed the Linux partition because I use eComstation Boot Manager for multi booting.

I used to have a bumpersticker that said:

Just remember, OS/2 began life when Microsoft and IBM signed a deal to work together on it. The year was 1985. That was the same year "New Coke" was introduced.

Just a thought.

I still have a copy of the install disks for Microsoft OS/2 version 1.0. eComStation is the continuing development of the operating system from Warp 4.5. Version 2.0 is now in Silver Release.

Linux and eCS play well together as long as one remembers to but the grub on the Linux install partition. There is even a user group devoted to users of both.

My son did the install last evening. I had to run chkdsk AGAIN on the Win7 partition. No wireless yet on the Ubuntu side, driver problem.

I upgraded my desktop from 9.04 to 9.10 over a week ago, and my laptop a couple days ago. No problems on either, really.

Haven't noticed much of a difference in everyday work. I just like having the latest applications.

OS/2 - I was a big fan of it in the mid 90s. Not clear on why anyone would still use it. Is there any reason other than pure novelty?

So I found my first 9.10 glitch. Apparently there is something amiss with using Eclipse and Ubuntu 9.10 involving some buttons. Not sure of all the details but as I use variations of Eclipse as my main IDE(s), I will stick with 9.04 on my main box for now.

Slow processing? Ubuntu and Linux in general typically have rank behind Windows in multi-media applications benchmarks. This is chalked up to the fact that Linux does not have the proprietary codecs and compressors that vendors provide to Microsoft and they include in Windows distributions.

However, for straight out business apps where multi-tasking (and multi-processing) are the critical factors, Ubuntu and Linux in general have a long track record of kicking Windows' pants in such benchmarks.

But yeah, if you are doing a lot of video/audio/graphics work, I think the benchmarks well demonstrate Windows has the lead. Since I don't normally do a lot of that, I never notice anything but being amazingly faster performance over Windows.

It seems U 9.10 has a lot of "glitches." From a British Ubuntu paper:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/11/03/karmic_koala_frustration/

....more than a fifth of people upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 have reported issues they can't fix, according to an Ubuntuforums.org poll here. Only around 10 per cent of those upgrading or installing reported a completely flawless experience.

Overall, those installing Ubuntu 9.10 on a clean machine are having a slightly easier time than those making the upgrade. Users installing Ubuntu 9.10 were able to solve more of the niggling problems than those trying to upgrade from an older version.

Canonical and Ubuntu should be worried. Typically, it's the more technical users overall who install Ubuntu - and early adopters tend to be the most technical of the technical.

If these people are experiencing problems they cannot solve, then the outlook for Ubuntu among a broader, less technical consumer base - especially on prized netbooks against Windows 7 - is not great.

I still cannot get 9.10 to recognize either my ethernet port or wireless card.

Toms Hardware utterly slammed it.

Still working great for me on both computers.

The next release will be a Long Term Support release, which tend to be pretty solid.

Other than a couple hiccups on one machine (which may actually have been a different program causing the problem) and the work-around issue with Eclipse, we have found 9.10 to be quite solid. I just installed another round of updates yesterday on it, so I am still not quite ready to commit my daily workhorse to 9.10 as it runs very reliably (and predictably) on 9.04 at this time.

Ironically 9.10 has been best Ubuntu installation so far for me. One has to wonder if having fixes for my glitches on an older system is what has been causing problems for others.

I've been running 9.10 at work for a couple of months now, I guess. It's been the smoothest Ubuntu experience I've had.

9.10 is now on my Asus EEE and runs ok, except it does not like the tiny battery. Every time I boot up it says the battery is damaged and can only hold 1.9% of its intended charge.....

BTW, E-sword 7.7.7 works just fine under Wine.

My son just emailed me to say he had gotten U 9.10 to recognize the wireless card on my big CompaQ notebook.

YAY!!!!

BTW, I have another battery on order for my EEE netbook It is about twice the capacity of the current one.
