quote:
Why We Need Parables Joe McKeever Dwight L. Moody used to remind pastors to "put the cookies on the bottom shelf so everyone could reach them." What he meant--and what he practiced as well as it could be done--was, "Keep the message simple." Make it accessible to everyone. How many times have we sat in a class or church service that was numbing our brain and lulling us to sleep because of its "precept upon precept" style of presentation, when the speaker/preacher said those magic words that jerked us back to life: "Let me tell you a little story...." We sat up and listened for a dozen reasons. We are built to enjoy a story (which is nothing in the world but a recount of how someone other than ourselves dealt with life; it's how we learn), we love a good laugh, we devour great insights, and we appreciate the break in the flow of the lesson that day. But what we especially appreciate is that the story may help us grasp the contents of whatever principles the speaker was sharing. Case in point.... They criticized the Lord Jesus for hobnobbing with the lower class, people who were clearly sinners, bad influences, and reputation ruiners. Now, had our Lord graduated from certain schools of preaching current today, He would have answered something like this: "There are three reasons why these creatures need me... What is it about that story that you like so much?

Prodigal's brother. Had it all - twice the amount of inheritance as his brother, no bills (living at home), and still had his father, and it wasn't enough. It was a huge fortune too, because half of it is how much the younger brother got, and it was enough to sustain him WITHOUT WORKING for many years, as he wasted it. Normally, you have to lose your father before you get your inheritance. He did not. He got his blessing (inheritance) because of someone else (brother), and had nothing to do with it. Mt 6 33 Keep your eyes on Jesus and his works, and good stuff that you want will come to you. He was a hypocrite. He told his father V30 that his brother wasted his living with harlots. ??? How did he know his brother had hired harlots? Remember, the younger went to a FAR country V13 which was probably not the country next - door, so the older either WASTED his resources spying by himself, or hiring a spy. He lied. He told his father that he had not given him so much as a goat V29, to have a goat-picking BBQ with his friends. ??? Surely the vast inheritance must have included a goat??? He was insecure. He heard the hoedown from out in the field, and he didn't go running to the house with excitement to join in the fun (music and dancing). What did he do? He STOPPED, and asked someone who was not a family member, what was going on. Poor guy... V28 He was angry, and would not go in. What news about a returned relative could make one angry? It wasn't going to hurt his inheritance, affect his bills, or take his father. He already had it all... "YOUR son...", he called him, to his father... Absence didn't make the heart grow fonder, or resolve any problems that were there before he left??? He sure didn't want to share any SPIRITUAL blessings either - kinda' like Jonah... Lots more where that came from!

http://www.biblestudytools.com/matthew/passage.aspx?q=Matthew 13:44-46 I think of Jim Elliott: He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose. I think that the quote is that, or close to that. These two similar parables speak to me about getting our priorities straight, and seeing the Kingdom of God for the valuable treasure that it is. Too many people on our planet seem to think that the Kingdom of Heaven is a swamp or bog which people need to wade through to keep from going to hell, instead of viewing it as this parable explains.
