ORIGINAL: W.O.F. well....I have decided to bid you all adieu in this thread. My time is pretty crunched right now, and I have to pick and choose some threads to give up. Since this thread is not so much about talking about differences/questions that Brits have for non-brits or vice versa anymore, and more about Brits discussing what they've watched on tv lately, etc....not really a place for those of us who aren't Brits or who don't spend a lot of time watching the telly. I'd tell you all to have a nice day and enjoy yourselves, but don't wish to contaminate anyone with any more things American than they have already been contaminated. Thank you for for the fun! Yes and thanks for halloween.NOT.lol

Kraft decided to make a byproduct of Vegemite by combining it with their Cheese Cream (because lots of people like Vegemite and cheese sandwiches or toast). They then ran a competition to name it and the winning name was "iSnack 2.0". Everyone hates the name and weren't buying the product and thinks the competition was bogus so the company is no longer using the name and is still thinking of a new one. Moral of the story - DON'T MESS WITH VEGEMITE!

VEGEMITE or MARMITE SCROLLS 2 1/4 cups self raising flour 75 g cold butter - finely chopped 1 egg - lightly beaten 2/3 cup milk 1/4 cup Vegemite or Marmite 2 cups grated pizza cheese 1. Lightly grease two, 12 hole muffin pan (1 1/2 tablespoon capacity) 2. Place flour and butter in large bowl, rub in butter with fingers until mix looks like breadcrumbs. Add egg and milk. With flat bladed knife, stir mixture until combined. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until dough comes together. 3. Divide dough in half. Roll each half between baking sheets into a 25cm x 35cm rectangle. 4. Spread each portion with the Vegemite or Marmite. Sprinkle with grated cheese. Roll up lengthways to enclose cheese and trim ends. Cut into 2.5 cm slices and put each into pan holes. 5. Cook in oven 200 C, for about 20 mins, or until golden. Serve hot cold. **Vegemite / Marmite can be replace with peanut butter, tomato chutney, chocolate hazelnut spread or jam.**

Yep, I am saying they are equal, interchangeable. I am not the only Aussie who can eat either one. They are both tastey with their own unique flavours.

I have arrived! I read about 10 of the 228 pages, funny stuff! Just thought I would say hi, and that marmite is one of the most disgusting things I have ever eaten and I had to try so hard not to spit it out (because my kids were watching) when I accidentally (my brother sneaked in into a sandwich) ate it a while back! So, Hi!

So, Hi! Ah well, you either love it or hate it!! Roughly whereabouts in the UK are you - only if you're comfortable saying though. If you'd rather not be too specific, you could always just say North South East or West, lol. It's funny that you said this. I'm reading an anthropology book titled Watching the English. Maybe you've read it or heard of it. It was a bestseller in the UK. The author studied what was unique about the English. One of the things she pointed out was that English people don't ask what people do for a living, or where they live. Of course, on the Internet, that is a good policy. Many Americans will ask just about anything. The no-no questions here are askig about age, weight, or salary. I was raised to be more private than a lot of Americans. My mother taught us never, ever to ask what somebody paid for something or where they bought it. In fact, money is a taboo subject in my family. Like I have no idea how much my parents made or how much they have saved now that they are retired. Many Americans will just blurt out anything about themselves, sometimes to total strangers in the grocery line. My friend who is a psychiatrist calls that "bad boundaries."

So, Hi! I think the problem with people who dislike Marmite or Vegemite is that when they try it for the first time they spread it on like it was jam or peanut butter and of course the taste will be overwhelmingly strong. I don't like it that way. It only needs to go on in a thin scrape to get a satisfying taste, Also the the taste is altered depending on whether you use butter, margarine, canola or olive oil spread. Also the type of bread can change the taste - I like fresh white bread best with the vegemite or marmite. Doesn't taste so good on wholemeal bread. What do you think Manda?

In the UK, apparently ALL Americans are called Yanks, whether from the South, the North, the Midwest or the West Coast (where I'm from), so we Americans should just get over it, eh? As per the earlier posts on this thread, out here in California an increasing amount of natural gas (methane gas or just plain "gas" in Britain) is coming from closed-down landfills. The accumulation of garbage underneath the landfills creates pockets of methane gas, and a network of pipes bring it to the surface. From there, the gas is often piped to an on-site generating station where it is burned as a clean fuel for creating electricity. Near Los Angeles, the Puente Hills Landfill (the largest in the United States) has had such an on-site generator for several years. You can see the clouds of steam, the byproduct of burnt methane, rising to the air from the station. The electricity generated is then sold to the local utility. A nearby hotel and resort built on a closed landfill powers its air conditioning system from the underground gas pockets. Although landfills in and of themselves are yucky, the natural gas that is created and collected from the buried garbage is a creative alternative energy source.

It only needs to go on in a thin scrape to get a satisfying taste, I agree with you about people using too much to begin with but I am also award that the more you acquire the taste, the more you can have. I use far more Marstons Marmite than I do original Marmite, but it is a different flavour. I'm still pretty generous when I use original Marmite. quote:

Something like that... just as so many Americans fail to understand that Europe is made up of individual and unique countries and would often like to be seen as such. Not to mention that many Americans (see, I'm being nice to them, I'm not calling them Yanks right now! ) refer to 'England' or 'Europe' when they're talking about Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland (and even the RofI). Things that happen in Europe do not necessarily happen in the UK ~ just as things that happen in South America and Canada do not necessarily happen in the USA.
