Oh, I wish I had the self discipline it takes to go to the gym regularly. For me it would be just a huge waste of money. I remember in the 1980's aerobics were a big thing. I bought the videos but they only collect dust now! I think back on those times now and wonder why in the world did I have such a poor self image. I was actually very thin then but thought I was fat. I dealt with anorexia when I was in my early teens. You wouldn't know it by looking at me now .
Cherish, hang in there with those hand exercises. Just do the best you can cause really that is all that you can do. Are the exercises meant to increase your mobility and use of them or will they actually help decrease the swelling? What you describe of your hands sound so painful and I truly am sorry that you deal with this. You are in my prayers.
Hope MissInnocent is doing alright today. If your drinking the aloe juice as I suggested then I certainly hope it is lessening your acid reflux issue.
I have never went to the chiropractor. Some silly reason I have always been frightened by that. I deal with chronic back pain and there is just something about the sound of cracking my back and realigning it that truly frightens me. I do think I could handle the accupuncture though. However without health insurance my resources are very limited.
You all have a blessed day!

Hey y'all. Been a while since I've posted here... The PC has been down since like mid-September.

Anyway, I saw a new rheumatologist on 23rd. This one is a LOT better than the previous one. She seemed to be satisfied with my fibromyalgia dianogsis (as am I), but she decided to run some more tests, just to make sure because the other one didn't run as much as he should have. They took 8 viles of blood! She should call us with the results on Wenesday.

I'm sorry but the part I bolded runs all over me. I took an aerobics class one semester of college cause I needed an elective and thought it'd be good for me. My health wasn't quite as bad as that point as it is now and I was trying to do something good for myself. My hair dresser has the nerve to ask my mom why I was taking it cause "She's not fat!" Um so? I only weigh aroudn 100 pounds but I am NOT in good shape. You can be 200 pounds of muscle. It's about your HEALTH not your size! Yes I want a better looking body than the one I got but I by NO means think I'm fat. I also get quite ticked off at women who are jealous of me for being small. You try finding clothes SMALL enough to fit right, see how happ you are!

End rant! As for the chiropractor, I think part of the pain is the fact we aren't in the right alignment to start with. So the chiro helps. Sometimes though I have been known to do some cracking on my own that messes me up. I just have to be careful. My insurance doesn't cover it either. I'm just lucky to have the money to cover it. I'd rather spend money out of my pocket for good care than have the insurance company pay the regular doctors to make me sicker.

Not real certain why my personal assessment of myself could spark a rant but sorry, that was how I felt back then. When I was 13 and 14 years old living with a sickness that had me convinced I was fat.
Adrenalinejunkie, so glad you are back! Didn't ya have a birthday not long ago???
Cherish, hope when you read this you are feeling fine!
You all are in my prayers tonight.

IWSH, I know how it goes with eating disorders and bad self esteem. A few years back, I was diagnosed with bulimia nervosa. I couldn't understand as I always thought that people with eating disorders were really thin. It seems not, as I'm prime example.

AJ, I'm glad that you've found a better rheumatologist who's helping you through things. Much better.

I've got some other aides to help me with my hand exercises. Easy things. The gloves are helping my hands to not swell as much. They're still pretty painful, but I'm hoping that will change.

No one has posted here for a few days so I hope all of you are well.
Cooler temperature here in Georgia. It is a welcoming relief with one exception. I tend to ache more in the winter. Naturally, I am not looking forward to it. Makes it much harder to get up and get motivated, much less having to go to work. Thankfully, I only work part time. Don't think I will ever work a full time job again.
Cherish, are the gloves helping to minimize the swelling in your hands? Are they having to be worn constantly with the exception of bathing?
Do the hand excersises seem to be working for ya?
Hoping that each of you are doing well. AJ, I too, hope this new rheumatologist is helpful to you.
Take care everyone!

I know what you mean about the cooler temperatures messing with the pain. Good thing we only have like 2 months of winter here in the south! It seems that rain hurts me worse than cold though. Which is not too good because we have been getting DRENCHED the past few months.

I am also from the south, Georgia. Fortunately for me, winter is not long here either. Yes, the rainy weather is also not my friend .
So when it is a cold and rainy day I have more problems......
I think working part time helps me to not focus on the pain as much. But it is an effort some days.

The gloves are helping some with the swelling. I don't wear them when bathing, eating or drinking, (because I don't want to get them dirty). I don't wear them outside either as the dog of mine, sure loves for somebody to throw his tennisballs for him. If I don't take the gloves off, they get filthy. Just washed them yesterday.

I do hot and cold baths too. My hands go into cold water for 1 minute, then in hot for 3. That happens until my hands have been in the hot water for 5 times and the cold for 6. It helps my hands to not swell as much.

Hi everyone!
Hoping that you are still seeing improvement with swelling, Cherish. How long does your doctor want you to wear these gloves, indefinately? When you say you alternate your hands into hot and cold water, does that mean ice water? That just sounds achy and painful to me, but if it works...

Apparently the hand condition can go away, but it takes some work on my part. At least I know now that it's not incurable, like fibromyalgia is.

The contrast baths are to be done every day. It isn't as bad as it sounds. And after the temperatures of the last few days, (yesterday was 99F), cold water is very welcome.

I haven't been wearing my gloves the last few days as it's been so hot. It is telling on me though as my hands are very swollen. I think I'm just going to have to start wearing them again and hope they don't get too hot.

I saw the rheumatologist last week. She asked how things were going with the hand OT. I showed her the sheets of exercises that I've been given. She's very impressed. I was telling her that my left little finger in particular was really painful. It clicks and grinds when I'm trying to move it or straighten it. She checked all of my fingers, with me screaming at the top of my lungs. When she got back to the problem finger, she told me that that one had a different problem. It's called a 'trigger finger'. For that, I was given a cortisone injection. I'm not easily put off by needles. I've had enough of them to get used to them. I have to tell you though, this was the most painful injection I've ever had. I've had cortisone injections before for other things, but they've given anaesthetic at the same time. Not this time! Apparently the colour in my face just drained out and a few hours later, it hadn't improved any. It took a few days, but finally the pain and swelling went down.

Earlier this week, for the first time in many months, I was able to clench my hands into a fist! When I showed the hand OT yesterday, she was so excited! She was clapping her hands. My hands are swelling up again now, but at least I know what to do to help reduce the swelling.

She used a special machine on my face, shoulders, arms and hands yesterday. She started on my face. It emits electrical impulses, and apparently when done on the nerve endings on the face, it tells the brain to relax. Apparently I was looking pretty sleepy about half way through the procedure on my face. She's had clients nearly fall asleep when she's been using this machine on them. Next time she's going to use it on my spine. I don't know what that has to do with hands, but she said she'd try and get my spine to relax. It sure could use it!

Do any of you find that your fibromyalgia worsens around the holidays? Whether that be Thanksgiving or Christmas?

How do you lower your stress levels around those times so that you reduce the likelihood of getting fibromyalgia.

I know my stress levels have been rising lately. Got some things going on.

For a long time, Christmas hasn't been an easy time for me. Don't know what it is. I just get really depressed, even though it's supposed to be a time where we celebrate Jesus' birth.

I'm noticing that fibromyalgia is worsening too.

I have been meaning to answer your question, Cherish. My fibromyalgia is definately acting up more. Whether it is due to stress that comes with the holidays, I do not know. I haven't thought much about it, but I bet there is some truth in it. I try not to get stressed during the holidays, but I know I do. I'm sure I do. Not stressed that I have a whole list of to do things, I think my stress comes from missing those we love who have passed away. My mother, my nephew. Christmas was the last holiday I spent with my nephew, Matthew before he committed suicide.
So, hows the hand therapy going for you? Can You clench both hands into fists now?
Hope all who are here have a blessed day.

Christmas is a time when I miss those who've passed on too. Also a time of some really bad memories. Even though I don't live with the same people that I made those memories with, I just can't stop thinking about them.

I can still clench my fists. My left hand is getting swollen again so I'm going to have to do something about that. I see the hand OT again on Tuesday morning.

How much movement can you do before your body revolts?

Just thought I'd pop in here and see how everybody is doing.

Do any of you notice your fibromyalgia symptoms being cyclical? I do. Right now, I'm at the REALLY painful part of the cycle. Hopefully it won't stay that way though for too much longer.

I've been hurting more lately due to the colder weather. When I'm out in it for even a few minutes it's absolute torture. Especially if my hands are exposed, because they freeze easily and it take up to 30 minutes to get them warm again. It's so annoying.

I've never really thought about as being cyclical.

I hadn't thought of it being cyclical, but one of the people that I live with mentioned that that's how he saw it happening with me. I don't know. I just know I'm in pain. Yes, there are times when pain is worse than others, but still wouldn't have thought of it as a cycle.

Between the cold weather and this nasty rain, I feel like I have been run over by a bus. I hate even having to be out in it, but I have to finish shopping for the holidays. This is when a credit card would be handy,I could just order everything online!
Sorry, that I have not been on but my internet had been down for bout three weeks. That was tough cause I really enjoy interacting with everyone here. I kept you all in my thoughts and prayers, though. I do hope we all get to feeling better soon.
Cherish, are ya still having to wear the gloves? Have ya been back to the hand therapist lately or are you through now? And, how is Bailey????
AJ, my heart hurts for you each time I think of you dealing with fibro at such an early age. Are ya able to keep your spirits up? I sure hope so.
Take care everyone.

Hi there!

I probably should be wearing gloves, but it's really hot here. At one point yesterday I couldn't close my hands. I exercised them a bit, and then was able to close them again. I haven't been back to the hand OT's yet. My fibromyalgia has been so bad that I just haven't been able to make it. Yesterday, I could barely walk from the pain. I plan on going back in the new year.

Bailey's doing well. The neighbours have their grandkid's dog over there, and Bailey doesn't like it. He doesn't bark as much as he used to at it. The dog the other side of them has taken to barking, then of course, Scotty, (the dog next dog), starts up. The neighbour thought it was Bailey doing all the barking, but it's not. She even told him off for it. (She's got hearing problems, but can obviously hear a dog barking, but not figure out the direction). I tell Bailey that it's ok for Scotty to bark in his own back yard and to just take care of what's on our side of the fence. Sometimes he charges to the fence. Occasionally he barks, but on the whole, he's pretty good.

Today makes it exactly one year since I've been on my current medicine. I must say, I feel lot better than I did this time last year. At least as far as the pain goes.

I'm glad the pain meds are helping you.

The meds I'm on at the moment aren't enough. I'm in a LOT of pain these days. The rheumatologist has referred me to the chronic pain specialists, but there's a 9 month wait to get in to see them.
