I am also very grateful that this thread was created. I am a newbie at chatting and one huge reason for my being here is that my 24 year old son tried committing suicide on Mar 4, 2009. My heart and soul were crushed. My beautiful son, my baby hated living so much he saw no other way out. The hopelessness and desperation to change something in his life and that seemed to be the only thing he had power over. The pain and anxiety that we as parents deal with every day not knowing if he will try again, not knowing how to help him, not knowing what to ask or not to ask, hoping that life will get better for him and for us. I am so weary and sad that my son suffers from clinical depression. I am also very sad that he is not a believer. That is the saddest of all. This has been so devastating for us and me as a mom and a believer especially.
Thank you all for sharing. It has encouraged me to keep praying and keep on encouraging him.

I just found out that a friend of mine took her life on Friday. Her family isn't holding any type of funeral for her. She wasn't a Christian.

I have been around suicidal people many, many times in my life. I just can't figure out why I didn't pick up on any signs? I can't remember her saying or doing anything that would make me think that she was going to commit suicide.

Roberta, I don't believe there always are "signs" that we can pick up on. For some, I think it is a quick, irrational thought. I also believe that some people do very, very well at hiding their feelings from others. Your friend may have been able to do this. Right now, you are probally in a state of shock because you didn't see the "signs", but they just may not have been there for you to have been able to see. I am praying for you and all involved. Please remember your friend with love today. God be with you.

Roberta, I agree very much with this.

My prayer for you right now is that Our Lord cover you in His Peace and His Comfort.

Last Monday she told me that she was awaiting some medical test results. She said that if it was bad news she didn't know what she would do. She had diabetes. I thought it had something to do with the diabetes. Another friend talked to her on Wednesday, she hadn't gotten the results back yet. Thursday she got the results, she had cancer. She made a plan and followed through. As far as I know, no one called her on Thursday. Her boyfriend found her in the early hours on Friday morning. She was still alive and was rushed to ER. She passed away around 10 am Friday morning.

Oh Roberta. I'm so deeply sorry.

Aside from the lost of life of a person who commits suicide, another one of the casualties of such a situation are the questions left behind in those that love the person, along with feelings of guilt as to why they couldn't have seen such a thing coming.

But, often, people simply cannot see the "signs". Sometimes there simply are no signs. Sometimes someone acts immediately, based on fear or panic; sometimes they've simply come to the end of what they feel they can handle. Sometimes . . . they intentionally hide the signs because they don't want anyone to intervene.

Regardless, the guilt that people feel is not accurate; it's a normal response, but it doesn't mean that the guilt is valid.

My heart truly hurts for the pain that you're going through.

As does mine. Remember this, Roberta. You did nothing wrong. You did not (as far as I know) ignore signs that you knew were there. You said it yourself. You could not see the signs. And Sharon-Marie is correct in saying that sometimes there simply aren't any signs. Please do not beat yourself up over this. You have my prayers in this.

I echo what James and Sharon-Marie said. {{{{{Roberta}}}}} May God's healing love flow over you in this time of pain. May you find peace and strength in His arms. And may this peace flow through you and touch everyone effected by this untimely death.

Tomorrow is the 11th Annual National Survivors of Suicide Day.

Please remember to lift those in prayer who have lost a loved one to suicide.
