I don't "qualify" to post in this thread . . . but if y'all want some moral support, I can sure do that.

Spring Cleaning!!!! One closet at a time!

At least, that's how I start. It may not sound like much, but I have to do this every year.

Remove everything from the closet - walk-in, accordian door, regular hallway, whatever size - and sort in 3 piles.

TOSS
KEEP
GIVEAWAY

and then I just do it.

It is quite freeing. I'm on closet #3 this coming weekend.

In other rooms that are cluttered or over-crowded, I dvidie it up into sections. For example in my kitchen, I have a cupboard and a bookshelf...each was it's own project.
^^^THIS is excellent!

Over the years, I have developed a system where I do an annual overhaul and go through my entire abode and get rid of things; using "toss, giveaway, keep". For me to keep something, I must have used it within the previous 12 months and must anticipate using it within the coming 12 months (Wall hangings don't count . . . I "use" those every day. LOL).

Then, I also go through things on a monthly basis and do somewhat of the same thing; except not as intense.

Then, I also go through paperwork on a weekly basis and do all my paperwork from the previous 7 days. Everything gets attended to and then the paper is either trashed or filed. Incidentally, regarding paperwork, I only touch a piece of paper as few times as possible. For instance, mail . . . if I know what it is (i.e., a bank statement or a phone bill), I don't open it until the day I do my paperwork. I simply bring it home from the post office and put it (unopened) in my in-basket until paperwork day rolls around.

Incidentally, I actually help people get organized in their homes and in their offices; it's one of my services that I provide through one of my businesses.

I can only speak for me, but yes please! Together with ideas and suggestions as to where to start!

Ok, question... how do you deal with something that has no earthly use to anyone but carries a lot of memories for you?

Are you asking me, Aga?

I don't put a lot of value into material things. Part of that is because I have lost my possessions on more than one occasion, so I have learned to be able to let go of stuff. "Lost" as in not misplacing them but in having them stolen, etc.

For me, I go by the philosophy that I'll always have my memories; and those are often enough.
You may be familiar with my trike
If so, you may also know that it was the first gift that CS ever bought me when we were first dating. Not only was it a highly useful thing, it also held great sentimental value for me. When I moved back to Jackson, I realized that it was going to cost way more to crate and ship it than I was willing to pay; so I left it in Pigeon Forge.

THAT was hard. I even cried over it. BUT! I got over it; and even though I don't have the trike any longer, I still have the memories; right back to the day I first hopped on it at the pawn shop and (unbeknownst to me) CS went inside and bought it for me while I was riding around playing on it. No matter where I go in life, I'll always have that memory.

As far as things that have no use to anyone but that mean a great deal to you (generically), if it were me, I would need to decide if it was worth my keeping. This is where many people talk themselves into keeping something . . . and pretty soon, they have a lot of other similar things they're keeping.

If you simply cannot part with it, then keep it.
But, I would first encourage you to remember that you can always revisit the memories surrounding the item and you don't need the item to for such memory-lane strolling.

I'm asking anyone (within reason ) who can help me get rid of stuff!

I know about your trike, I didn't realise that CS bought your first one though.

I think I worry most about losing the memories. I know sometimes that will be a good thing, but sometimes it seems to be a bad thing...

Sigh... I've never lost all of my possession, but I have lost most of them a couple of times. I used to be really good about ditching things, but I seem to have become a bit of a clutterbug.

Yep!
And so far, it's been my only trike (at the moment, I don't have one).

{{{Aga}}}

In addition to having my possessions stolen, I've also been the personal representative of two estates (my dad and CS). My dad died in '90; and it took me 6 months of going out to his house and working (40 hours / week) to get the house ready to sell. I would say that 95% of that time was sifting through stuff; the other 5% was actually devoted to getting the house ready for market.

It was then that I became a minimalist.

When I met CS, I surprised myself and everyone I knew by getting involved with him . . . he definitely was NOT a minimalist. He was a quite a collector. In fact, museums have told me that one of the best kept secret musuems was his house. It took me a year to go through his stuff (working anywhere between 40 - 80 hours each week); and even then, I wasn't anywhere finished. But, I was working in a very defined time-frame; and so a year is all I had. What I didn't sell, donate or give away, I left at the house.

When I die, my plan is that it will take whoever goes through my stuff no more than a couple of days; 3 at the most.

I don't want to minimize what you are feeling; that's not at all my intent.
I will however encourage you to realize that the less clutter and stuff one has in their life, the less cluttered their mind is. Truly. There's a quietness and peacefulness surrounding not having a lot of material things.

It's so decluttered, I couldn't remember how to sign my name this morning!

It's just muddled looking at vacuum cleaners.

Well, I've ordered my new vacuum cleaner. Should be here on Wednesday. I decided against the robotic one as it doesn't do ceilings! I may not be able to do all the floors, but the ceilings are clear of junk!

Hmmm... If my ceilings are clear of junk, does that mean my house if half tidy?

Have you considered getting some film and taking some interesting pictures of the item(s)? Different backgrounds, maybe a few with you in the picture?

As the years go by...pictures are a lot easier to store and handle than larger objects.

I went in the dreaded cupboard under the stairs this afternoon... I didn't finish, but there's a lot crammed in there

Any young wizards???

Somebody mentioned FlyLady earlier-- her big thing is to go to bed with your sink shiny. I think I'll make that a priority tonight. DS's bedroom is a fright (as my Brit friends might say). Maybe I'll go spend some time encouraging him into tidiness by removing some beloved toys... Bribery will get you everywhere!

But then I'd have to replace the camera! Can't afford to do that given I've just replaced the vacuum cleaner!

Everything got done except for the bedroom. Gotta clear some things though in there to prepare for the dresser...which is being delivered on Thursday.

My vacuum cleaner arrived today. I used on the 2 sq" of floor that I could see. It seems to work! Rather quieter than my last one although it's more powerful. Tomorrow my ceilings will be clean of junk and dust!

I've been thinking of y'all (everyone in this thread) these past few days.

That's it.

At the the moment, I just got back from running errand for the past 4 hours, so my brain is decompressing.

Aga, what kind of stuff (junk) do you have on your ceilings? Hanging things, like plants?

It refers back to this comment I made.

I have nothing on my ceilings at all. I've got some metal bands around the wooden beams (to stop them splitting) and a couple of wooden cats sitting in them (well 1, 1 fell down when I dusted it a while back ) but that's it.

Hmmm... now there's a thought, I could brighten them up with something (artificial) trailing down a little ~ ivy or something.

Then you would have to dust them regularly. No! Don't do it!

That's what I was thinking! I HATE dusting, so I try to keep decor clutter to a minimum. It's the papers that get me!

Aga-- My vacuum broke down a bit ago... turns out, they expect you to change the bag every once in a while! I changed it and the thing started right up and works fine. Whew! Couldn't afford a new one at the time!

So much for the shiny sink-- just haven't had it in me to worry about a dish or two...

Honest? Yes--the dust will be there and people might notice. You put something up there and people will look. "Oh, what a beautiful [and very dusty] ivy!"

I try to not put anything anywhere unless I feel like dusting it regularly. Keep things simple, and they are simple to clean.
