I managed to get in 27 miles last week (Mon.- Sat.) by working in an extra quarter of a mile a few of those days.

As the temperature drops and after the time change, it usually becomes more of a challenge for me to keep my totals very high, since I prefer walking outdoors to a treadmill.

Over the course of the day, I managed 6.25 miles yesterday, but the temperature was at the lower extreme of my tolerance for outdoor walking. Fortunately, warmer weather is returning... for awhile, at least.

This past summer, I was walking about 45 minutes to an hour and a half each day, but then I developed a problem with one of my feet. My heel and arch hurt horribly, and I was told it was plantar faciitis. I had to stay off my foot for several days and I stopped my walking routine. Even today, after walking for just a little while, I can feel the pain in my foot along the heel and arch. I feel discouraged because I really do love the walking. I always feel so much better afterwards, and this summer I felt awesome physically and mentally!

I topped my previous high for the year by adding a quarter of a mile to four days, bringing my total to 28 miles for the week.

By spreading my walking sessions out over the day, I walked 6.5 miles three of the days. I have done that much at one time in the past, but it's been awhile.

I walked 7 miles yesterday, a half mile longer than I have been walking Mondays, Tuesdays, & Thursdays. The cool afternoon temperature probably helped a lot.

1.5 miles treadmill beginning 6:20AM
1.5 miles treadmill during lunch
4.0 miles after 5PM

With much cooler temps coming and the nearing time change, I don't expect to have many days with a distance like that until next spring.

Yesterday was very rainy, but I still put in 7 miles. A number of people came to the gym due to the rain and got on one of the 3 treadmills, so I walked 3 miles on the walking track and 4 on a treadmill.

One of the reasons I took up walking was concern that I might injure myself. After more than ten years, the only injuries that I recall from walking have been the occasional blister from poorly fitted shoes and the loss of a toenail when I push myself to hard and neglect proper technique. (For some reason, the toe next to the big toe develops a bruise underneath and kills the nail. It takes quite a few months before a new nail pushes the dead nail out.)

Listening to friends that run, I'm still glad that I made the choice to walk for exercise.

Eutychus, you have inspired me to don my walking shoes and get back out there. I really have been in a funk for the past two months or so, and I finally put two and two together - my funk showed up when I stopped exercising! Time to get back out there. I had gotten to a point where I could walk 3 miles at a stretch and I was proud of that considering I used to get winded walking to the mailbox lol!

Walking has been a great stress reliever for me, especially when I'm able to walk outside. It still helps when I go to our church fitness center to use the indoor track or treadmill, but I'd much rather walk outdoors, even when the heat index is 115° like it was during the summer. I just don't do cold weather very well outdoors...

I'm in a walking club at our church Recreation Fitness Center that is trying to replicate the distance of Paul's first missionary journey within 12 months, around 650 miles. We began sometime in April of this year.

For various reasons, my progress hasn't been impressive but October was a really good months for me, each week's total just a little better than the last. By squeezing in an extra quarter mile here and a half mile there, I managed a new best week with 31 miles for a total of 400 miles since the new club goal was set. Prior to that, I had accumulated 81 miles, which makes my year's total 481 miles walked.

Hi everyone! Long time no talk. I'm super proud of everyone that has been working hard toward their goals. That's awsome! Keep it up.
I haven't been on in a while because our family has been dealing with some tragedy. I'm trying to get my life back together now, and today was a big step. I went to the gym, and just did a really short workout with the machines. Isn't much, but it's a start. I'm looking toward a thanksgiving 5K. We shall see.

I do 1.5 miles in the early AM and 1.5 miles during lunchtime, both on a treadmill at the gym. I had worked up to an additional 4.0 miles after work outside, but with the time change, temps have dropped to the point it's uncomfortably cool for me. As musc as I dislike it, it won't be long before I'll have to go indoors for my evening walks too. Unfortunately, a lot of other people are doing the same and, so, treadmill availability decreases. The indoor walking track above the basketball court is an option, but it's extremely noisy, making walking there a real chore instead of the pleasure I get from the outdoors.

Eutychus, once I had experienced the pleasure of walking outdoors, it was hard to walk around and around on a track indoors with no real "scenery". I have a hard time just walking on a treadmill. At least with walking outdoors, I get to "go" somewhere, you know?

I do not mind the treadmill. What i hate is that people hog the walking tracks and you spend your whole time trying to get in and out of someone's way.

I remember now why my walking drops dramatically after the time change in autumn. Down here the temperature is fairly mild during the afternoon, sometimes even before noon. But the temperature drops quickly after sunset. I do my most serious walking after work, just after 5PM. After the time changed Sunday, sunset has come before 5PM. Even wearing a long sleeved shirt, I still cut my total from 7 miles to 6, four of which I normally do after 5PM.

I forgot you live in alabama.

You can go online and get lightweight winter running clothing. Lots of people walk year round here (even zero degree weather).

Oh and please get a reflective vest. No one can see all these walkers/runners/cyclists that are only wearing black.

When I walk outside it is on a path inside a city park with lighting - and I always wear a white cap, white shirt, and light pants & shoes. And when I used to walk in the neighborhood at nigh, I always carried a bright flashlight to make sure drivers saw me.

Something that surprises me is the number of people I see who walk on the righthand side of the road, with their backs to traffic. That is very dangerous. Just a few years ago and young man (married with small children) I knew was killed by a car while jogging with his back to traffic.

I was taught to walk facing traffic as a small child.

I live by the bike path and there is no sidewalk (and not lit up with streetlights either) so I see dangerous stuff every day.

So was I. And that you ride a bike with the traffic.

Is there a website for this "Race Walking"?

I use a treadmill in my home. I can keep my pace and watch TV. When you walk outside, how can you keep a pace or even know what your pace is?

Question - which is more important, speed or distance? Currently I'm walking at 3.5-3.7 mph for one mile, sometimes more. Which is more important to work on?

One place to start about Racewalking is Racewalking 101.

Speed or distance? I try for a combination. I walk fast almost as fast as I can (4.0-4.5MPH which is fast for most people), but I also try for a minimum of 3 miles four to fives days a week if I'm trying shed pounds and stay in shape. If I cut back the number of miles, I'll have to cut back on calorie intake or I'll gain.

Keep in mind that I only built up to my current speed and distance over time. It took me a full year to lose 25% of excess bodyweight and increase my endurance so that I could do 4-5 miles at one time.

There are websites you can use to track or your distance. If you like gadgets you can get a gps watch.

Then you just keep track of your time with a watch. So if you walk for 20 minutes at 3.0 mph - that is one mile.

Two parks where I've walked have mile posts to let me know how far I've walked.

But when I wanted to know the distance I normally walk in and around my neighborhood, I reset the trip meter in my car and drove where I normally walked.

Also, over time I learned that I can average 15 minute miles (4MPH) outside for up to 5 miles. But it's still nice to know for sure.
