I haven't really gotten any walking in at all this past week. However, this is a NEW week, along with a new month, so I'm headed out to the gym tonight and I'm going to walk, walk, walk until I feel better about life in general . It might be a loooong walk, the way things feel right now LOL.

I did a 5K on Sun morning. It was in the low 20's, and VERY windy!

Even though I loved it in college, I avoid running now. I don't mind a little soreness or the odd blister, but I know a lot more runners with serious injuries or significant pain from running than I know walkers who have injured themselves.

BTW, last week I completed 581 miles for calendar year 2009. This is a difficult time of the year for me to keep to my usual schedule because of so many events that I'm involved with. Last year I managed 649 miles walked, but I don't think I'll get that many in this year.

I'm back! I know you all missed me SO much 'ha? Glad to see everyone has been working hard, and making progress. That's awsome! Good job everyone!

Today I did about 1 1/2 - 2 miles (somewhere in there). No worry about speed, just doing it.

Eutychus, that's an amazing feet, pun intended ! I'm keeping track of the total number of miles walked this year, but at the moment, my foot is bothering me again, so I'm biking on the recumbent bike for now. Last night I went almost 9 miles.

Due to a case of hives that gets worse when I exercise, I only managed 590 miles for 2009. I'll be so happy when they have finally faded because I really miss walking.

I've only worn New Balance for the past 5-6 years. I've mostly worn cross-trainers in extra widths.

Like another shoe brand that I like for normal wear, when I've found the best model for me, they discontinue it and I have to start all over.

It is an awful lot easier to get OUT of shape than to get back in shape.

After about 2 months off due to a case of hives, I started walking again last week. I was seriously winded after just a half mile and my lower legs were hurting as if I'd never walked that far. I was only walking about 3.5MPH. In November I was walking 5-6 miles most days at 4 MPH or more.

This and last week I've only put in 1 mile a day. My breathing is better and my lower legs hurt less.

I have small feet so whatever fits . I think my walking shoes are New Balance.

I have Asics for running. It is still too cold to walk outside but decent weather for running.

That's great. It would look strange if you used them for gloves or hats.

I finally got over my second case of hives and started back walking this week. I walked 4 miles on Monday and another 4 on Tuesday. I walked 1 mile early in the morning and another mile at lunch, then 2 miles after work. Wednesday is a slack day when I only walk 2 miles. I'm a little sore, but my spirits have been high.

@ Euty....do you have allergies causing the hives?

I LOVE to walk, especially in the early morning, but that's not the safest anymore.

I started doing this in-home walking program with Leslie Sansone, great for rainy day alternative.

And I discovered when the pollen counts are so high they make me miserable, I do the dvd walking workout too.

It's equal to 3 miles each time. I was doing two worked up to three and I like it...hope it lasts.

I haven't had serious allergies as an adult until last December. I'm pretty sure that it was from eating a lot of citrus fruit that my BIL brought back from a trip to Florida. It took between 2&3 months to clear up, but it came back after about a month. The only change I can account for was that I began eating frozen strawberries for several evenings before they returned.

Not great, but I've had a pretty good first week back to walking. 4 miles on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. 2 Miles on Wednesday and Friday.

I had a dream I signed up for a 5k and didn't run it because I didn't have any socks.

That's pretty funny.

The walk went great today! I had a blast! My only complaint was that it was a little to hot, but at least it wasn't pouring rain!
Good luck to any one who has a race tommorow.

That is funny! There are a lot of people that are into the barefoot racing thing. Maybe your subconscious is trying to tell you it wants to try that?

Cool! I'm so glad there is a walking thread. I never come to this folder and never noticed it. I took up walking as exercise again about 2 months a go. I started with just one mile (4 times around the track) 3-4 times a week. Now I am up to a mile and half (6 times around). My goal is to start walking 2 miles each time. I try to walk very fast.

Do you stretch before walking? And does anybody carry weights while walking? And does anybody have any problems with one or both feet hurting after a walking? And what kind of sneakers do you wear?

No

No. I do weight work at a diffrent time.

No. You may not be using the right shoes/inserts, and that's why the foot pain. It could also be that your shoes need to be replaced. Tennis shoes/athletic shoes/running shoes etc. break down from the inside before you see it on the outside. They need to be replaced every 300-600 miles.

And what kind of sneakers do you wear?

I use a Nike brand running shoe with super feet inserts. The best thing you can do (esp. if your having foot pain) is get fitted for the right shoes.

To do this go in to a running speciality store (not a generic sports store). Bring with you the shoes that you currentlly walk in.

When I had mine done, I went into Road Runner. They looked at the shoes I was using, took measurements, had me walk across a thermal pattern, talked with me about all sorts of things (goals, current activity, past medical problems like shin splints, etc), and had me walk on a treadmill. They taped me on the treadmill, and than anylized it in slow motion. From all this they gave me a print out with the results, what type of shoe and insert I needed based on all of the data, and some shoe recomendations. All of this was free (a great price ).

Having the right shoes, and inserts for my needs has been wonderful! Sometimes I feel like I could go more miles than I should.

Congrats on the new walking journey. Hope you enjoy, and welcome to the walking thread.
