My dad's planning on frying the turkey this year. Three minutes per pound at 350* (I think) in an old beer keg with about 5 gallons of peanut oil. Good stuff. My wife's not looking forward to it, though.

Up until a few years ago it was big turkey, defrosted and baked in the oven. Stuffing in (Mrs. K) and baked in pans (Mom), canned cranberry and homemade rolls. You are supposed to stuff the turkey and bake the turkey in a pan. At least that's how we do it here.

Turkey Roaster--shallow roasting pan with loose foil on top for roasted turkey, or covered roaster for steamed turkey? Why are all the turkey snobs so insistent that roasted is better than steamed, and yet they make a great deal of fuss over how to prevent dryness in their roasted birds? I didn't even think about it being steamed! I started thinking about a roaster after I got an email from cooking.com. They want 50 bucks for it but walmart wants 40. I just don't know if I'd use it that much to justify it. Would steamed be better, after all it would hold in moisture? quote:
Sewing Machine--should I get the computerized or mechanical? Leaning towards mechanical...computerized says to my brain "hard drive crash". Like Miss Diva said, it depends on how much you sew. But I got a computerized one 24 years ago and it's still fine. It's a Pfaff. quote:
Furniture--recover old or buy new? We love our old chairs (large library comfy striped wing chairs), but maybe we should get leather which won't wear out? If you love the chairs then maybe you should think about recovering them. You could probably get new foam if it's worn out some. Leather to me just doesn't seem inviting. But I hate leather seats in cars too. quote:
Shower--fix grout in tile or replace with synthetic marble? Anyone want to manage the construction workers for me? I've already endured one anger outburst this week (and sadly this outburst was in me). Sorry, no clue. I wish I could offer you some advice. Larry is talking about getting me one of those tubs you open the door. (I might have already talked about it in here) They have jets like a whirlpool and there is a seat, but we have to see if it will be comfortable for me. I can't get in a tub anymore because of the knees, it's too hard to get out. I was bemoaning the fact and he offered to get this tub. Plus, I've really messed up our tub because I sometimes use toilet cleaner to get the rust stains out. We have terrible water.

Thanks for your input! Sewing machine--I am not a super frequent sewer, but I do sew many household items. I make our curtains and special blankets, repair or hem pants, make costumes for kiddos, etc. quote:
ORIGINAL: Kath I got a computerized one 24 years ago and it's still fine. It's a Pfaff. That's good to hear. This next week I will go to the store and sew on the three machines I'm considering. That should help me make my decision. Furniture--Hey, diva, that's cool you used to work as a consultant. I really hate shopping for furniture. Our chairs are still in excellent condition, with excellent support and such, but the fabric is a bit worn and truthfully we never loved the fabric all that much. I found a local man who can do a very good job on recovering. Picking out fabric is almost as hard as picking out new furniture! Tile--We are going to get a bid for a marble shower. If it is too much, we will just repair the grout. Roaster--Kath, are you speaking of a plug in electric roaster, or a roaster pan? Our old pan was a granite ware. This is the pan we bought today. It's expensive, but they last forever and are very good. It will be nice to have for roasting chickens and beef as well, so we think it is worth it. I'll let you know how it works on Thanksgiving. If you get an electric roaster, let me know how it works. I'm curious.

-Kath, are you speaking of a plug in electric roaster, Yes, the plug in kind. I figure if I'm going to spring for a roaster, it will be one that can free up the oven for other stuff. Plus I can use it to roast beef and pork. I'm going to do my holiday meal shopping on Monday, so I'll decide by then if I want to buy one or not. It seems like it could do more than just turkey.

I see many electric roasters at our church fellowships, so I can see that they come in handy. It would probably be a wise purchase Kath.

ORIGINAL: crankius Kerrlaw, you and all the Coffee Corner folks are always so full of good advice. Here are my recent issues that I need help with. All of these have to do with purchasing. I hate purchasing. I need a Personal Purchasing Assistant. Sewing Machine--should I get the computerized or mechanical? Leaning towards mechanical...computerized says to my brain "hard drive crash". I am not knowledgeable about sewing machines, but I can sell you one that is about 100 years old and is operated by working a treadle with your foot (if that's what you mean by mechanical). It is best operated while sitting on a dynamite box, which is how my grandmother sewed for over 50 years. quote:
Turkey Roaster--shallow roasting pan with loose foil on top for roasted turkey, or covered roaster for steamed turkey? Why are all the turkey snobs so insistent that roasted is better than steamed, and yet they make a great deal of fuss over how to prevent dryness in their roasted birds? Neither, according to Mrs. K. She cooks it in the oven in a roasting pan with no cover at all. Nobody has complained about dryness, especially me, but I like turkey to be dry. For the after-Thanksgiving turkey, we are relying on Food City bakery. quote:
Furniture--recover old or buy new? We love our old chairs (large library comfy striped wing chairs), but maybe we should get leather which won't wear out? You are talking to a guy (and his wife) who have used the same den couch for over 25 years. We have had it recovered twice. I bought it at Sears in 1984 and Cindy thinks it is the most comfortable couch in the world. We tried retiring it once, but ended up giving away the new one and again recovering old faithful. Same with a recliner that I acquired in the early 80s. If it is comfortable and you love it, recover it. quote:
Shower--fix grout in tile or replace with synthetic marble? Anyone want to manage the construction workers for me? I've already endured one anger outburst this week (and sadly this outburst was in me). Replace. We have been extremely happy with Bathfitters, who covered the tub and also covered the walls with faux tile. Expensive, but beautiful and lifetime guarantee. I am not familiar with synthetic marble. quote:
Applications for position of Personal Purchasing Assistant can be mailed to Kerrlaw's pm box. The processing fee of $50.00 can follow by mail.

The nurse at my doctor's office was going to get one for her mother, but it was very expensive.
