Lobster is healthy. Real butter is healthy. Coffee is an antioxidant. Can we have oysters too (great source of iron)?

I'll be fine!

As long as people don't get too frisky. It's gonna be kinda crowded, ya know.

Hey Kerrlaw, when the crazies finally have their way and WWIII breaks out, and fresh organic food gets nuked, and lack of electricity makes refrigeration impossible, and everyone is heading for the hills, our online friends will be begging us for a share of our precious SPAM stash.

You just wait.

SPAM and Twinkies--food that lasts for a lifetime. Literally.

Hmmm......if that's what you're eating, a lifetime isn't really that long.

Well said cranky.

The Lord must love fat, he made so much of it.

We gave our piano to my aunt's church, but I could probably borrow one.

Better yet, cranky can play her guitar.

"and bring your father and your families back to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt and you can enjoy the fat of the land."

Now that's what I'm talking about!

Except that "fat of the land" has nothing to do with eating fat.

Meaning: Living well; fed by abundant crops.

Hello all, glad that I have found Kerr's new place. I will send my dues in at a later date.

I am sick today. Maybe it was something I ate.

Nope, I haven't had any spam lately>

Spam casserole was my mother's favorite family potluck dish.

I can stomach spam provided it is fried with eggs and creamy peanut butter.

Hey, y'all are giving me an idea! Chunks of spam on a stick, dipped in batter and deep fried. That could be the hot new state fair food next year! I could set up a booth and make a killing....literally. I guess creamy peanut butter could be used as a dip.

Anybody try this year's state fair food trend? Deep fried butter? Or how about the chocolate covered chicken fried bacon? I didn't eat either.

Master Kerr, as I was reading (and giggling) through Three Men in a Boat - To Say Nothing of the Dog I marked things that I found particularly amusing and would like to share one of them here. I think it aptly suited for a Christian message board.

"I do not blame the dog (contenting myself, as a rule, with merely clouting his head or throwing stones at him), because I take it that it is his nature. Fox-terriers are born with about four times as much original sin in them as other dogs are, and it will take years and years of patient effort on the part of us Christians to bring about any appreciable reformation in the rowdiness of the fox-terrier nature."

I like it.

That part made me laugh, too. Such a funny book! I've finished it. I think Kerrlaw would like the book--really, anybody would like it. It's just so comical and interesting and oddly great.

I finished it last night and it was such an enjoyable read. I really did laugh out loud over a lot of it. "Oddly great" is a perfect description. Thanks so much for telling us about it!

I liked the story of the pathetic boat, the dispute of whether the boat was an early Roman coffin or the fossil of a pre-Adamite whale:

"Come, come, my lad!" said our captain sharply, "don't let us have any nonsense. You take your mother's washing tub home again, and bring us a boat."

And I liked this part:

"I don't know why it should be, but everybody is always so exceptionally irritable on the river. Little mishaps, that you would hardly notice on dry land, drive you nearly frantic with rage, when they occur on the water. When Harris or George makes an ass of himself on dry land, I smile indulgently; when they behave in a chuckle-head way on the river, I use the most blood-curdling language to them. When another boat gets in my way, I feel I want to take an oar and kill all the people in it."

more in the next post...

And this:

"How good one feels when one is full--how satisfied with ourselves and with the world! People who have tried it, tell me that a clear conscience makes you very happy and contented; but a full stomach does the business quite well, and is cheaper, and more easily obtained. One feels so forgiving and generous after a substantial and well-digested meal--so noble-minded, so kindly hearted....

Before our supper, Harris and George and I were quarrelsome and snappy and ill-tempered; after our supper, we sat and beamed on one another, and we beamed upon the dog, too. We loved each other, we loved everybody."

I thought the end when they start bawling like babies while singing the song was hilarious. Throughout the book there were just numerous lines about human nature and life issues that were entirely timeless and true.
