It's time for me to finish my chores so the rest of the day can be properly devoted to college football.

Kerrlaw, It might be good to go to PFY. Sorry I haven't posted much lately--my online time has been consumed elsewhere the last few days. How very strange and sad life is sometimes. On Friday, I received a phone call from a journalist. She said she wanted to speak with me about the death of my uncle. I thought it was a joke, so I asked for his name, and she gave me the name of one of my uncles. He was killed at Fort Hood. I had no idea. He was a very kind, loving, generous, warm man. It is tragic and sad that he died in this horrific manner. I feel such a great loss for his family, and for me as well. I hadn't seen him in person for over 17 years, and I always anticipated being able to see him again when our paths crossed. As you all know, I’m not real big on revealing private details of my life online, but here is my uncle—a father, a grandfather, and a terrific man. If you'd like, please say a prayer for his family. I’ve hesitated to post about this. One, there are politics involved, and religion, and some of these things various family members are discussing very publicly. For me, he was my uncle and I will miss him. Two, as many of you know I avoid posting anything of my identity online, but I don’t have in common either his name or location or any of the names/locations of any of the other family, so I think I can still keep my anonymity. It just seemed strange to keep this from my online friends, so here I am sharing.

I am so sorry cranky. It is obvious that he was a good man, and I will pray for comfort for his family.

Will be praying for you and his family. How unfortunate you had to find out from a reporter rather than another member of the family or a military chaplain. Such news is never welcome but the last thing most of us want is someone giving us shocking news and then sticking a mic in our face or recording or writing down our reaction(s).

Thanks everyone. The journalist was actually very nice (I think she felt bad), and I asked if I could speak with her later and quickly got off the phone. I didn't give her any quotes.

Thank you all so much! It really matters to me that you all care so much. I watched the memorial, and I did pretty well: watched my relatives walk to their seats, watched the speeches (muted Obama tho ), but lost it during the roll call and taps. And then of course, seeing the families grieve their loved ones as they walked by the empty boots, that was tragic as well. And here Mr. Kerrlaw, I've just about made your thread as lively as a fly in a bowl of water. So in honor of my uncle's proud Irish heritage, here is an Irish joke to liven the place up: Muldoon lived alone in the Irish countryside with only a pet dog for company. One day the dog died, and Muldoon went to the parish priest and asked, Father, me dog is dead. Could ya' be saying' A mass for the poor creature?' Father Patrick replied, 'I'm afraid not; we cannot have services for an animal in the church. But there are some Baptists down the lane, and there's no tellin' what they believe. Maybe they'll do something for the creature.' Muldoon said, 'I'll go right away Father. Do ya' think €5,000 is enough to donate to them for the service?' Father Patrick exclaimed, 'Sweet Mary and Joseph. Why didn't ya tell me the dog was Catholic?' (Funny, but as I observed the muted Obama speaking, I decided there should be a term for the teleprompter delivery method--his head went from left...to right...to left...to right...to left...to right...)
