I'm running the upgrade tool just for kicks-but my XP box has been extremely stable-no sense in messing with it.

ORIGINAL: neuronstatic Now there is a good point. If you are running a very stable installation of XP and there is no compelling feature of Win7 you really need, why change? Only upgrade if it is required or you are really just bored. Would you make the same recommendation for someone running Vista?

I would make the same recommendation for someone running Vista. I run Vista on my laptop. Its stable, does what I want, and there is nothing in Win 7 I need. So I have no intention of purchasing an upgrade. At home we have Vista on 2 desktops and XP on 4 desktops, 1 laptop, and 1 netbook. I see no compelling reason to change any of those at this time. I do have some stability issues on a home built machine but I think that is driver related and do not see that improving with Win7. Sometime next year I will be buying a laptop for my daughter for her to use when she goes to college. I expect that machine will come with Win7 and that is fine.

I'm running Vista on my desktop, and XP on my netbook, and I'll be sticking with each. Even though I get annoyed with XP sometimes for missing features I like in Vista (searchable Start menu, better explorer interface, etc.). The price just isn't worth it. Maybe if I were a student and could get it for $30, but I might stick with XP anyway, just for the slightly better battery life.

The battery life thing I hope they fix with SP1 whenever they get to that. I have heard there are settings that can help but have not dug that far yet. PROBLEM: I cannot get Wordperfect X3 to load, it does not even recognize the install CD correctly.

Windows Vista Users -- If you have survived this long with Windows Vista, you may be in no hurry to upgrade. People who like Vista may actually consider Windows 7 a step backwards in some regards. I like Vista. I've never had a single compatibility problem and it runs perfectly fine on my machine. I'll likely stick with it indefinitely. Yeah, that is kinda where I am at regarding the upgrade as well.
