DaveW -> WIN 7 is out (10/23/2009 6:42:58 AM)

Are you going to upgrade?

I picked up the cupon for a $39 upgrade last June. Probably this weekend I will pick it up for my laptop. I am thinking about picking up a larger HD for it anyway (only 80 gig) which needs to be divided betwen the Windows boot and the Ubuntu boot.

Just not sure if I have to put the vista virus back on it or if I can upgrade straight from XP.

Eventually. I don't qualify for the upgrade because i bought back in February. If I can get a discounted copy I will if it will recognize my blackberry.

stellaluna -> RE: WIN 7 is out (10/23/2009 9:43:15 AM)

I wouldn't mind trying it. I like Vista, though, so I'm not in a hurry.

rayofson -> RE: WIN 7 is out (10/23/2009 11:30:04 AM)

I'd like to eventually. Usually I like to let a new OS be out at least for a little while and let them hash out all of the bugs. Doubt if there will be huge issues with this one though.

The thing is that I'm the administrator for five computers. Three at church running Vista. One laptop at home with Vista and one desktop at home with XP.

There is a Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack Upgrade available for $149.99 good for three installs.

You can upgrade straight from XP, but it is a clean install. None of your files would be saved.

Also the upgrade is not available for Home Basic. [8|]

I am waiting for at least SP1, if not SP2 first...

Greetings Dave

I am downloading the version as we speak

The only issues I had with the beta it is the OS was very touchy and if the MoBo had 1 little discrepancy with the systems requirements ... the OS failed during the install.

Lets us know how it went…

I understand this is what Vista was supposed to be, but they rushed it to market too fast with too much hoop la and it bombed on them. So it really is not an entirely new OS. It is a streamlined (as in less recources) and updated Vista.

bigfrank -> RE: WIN 7 is out (10/23/2009 12:58:59 PM)

I hear that it is a very good OS, right out of the box. Lots of my friends have been using it for a long time in the form of the RC and beta. Seems to be flawless so far, and much easier for older computers to run than Vista was. I will hopefully try it soon.

Important!!!!! If you are a student, you can get it very inexpensively or even free. I have had the free copy for quite some time now, but I haven't installed it.

stateofgrace -> RE: WIN 7 is out (10/23/2009 4:19:10 PM)

I saw both the new Windows 7 and the new Windows 7-themed Mac commercials last night during The Office and 30 Rock. The Mac ones were pretty funny.

Miss Giggles -> RE: WIN 7 is out (10/23/2009 4:44:55 PM)

I agree. Apple's getting some competition.. the android phone will be out on verizon soon and their ads are directly aimed at the Iphone.

stellaluna -> RE: WIN 7 is out (10/23/2009 6:46:39 PM)

Conversely, I know a dozen people or so who are die-hard Mac users that are having trouble with Snow Leopard. Like, serious trouble. Like, reformat your hard drive trouble.

Here is a good tool to check and see if your PC is Win7 ready

I would love for this compatibility tool to work, but how long does it take? It's been running on my laptop for a couple of hours and I'm gettin' nothin'.

LoyalGypsy -> RE: WIN 7 is out (10/24/2009 11:14:36 PM)

I just ran it on an older Gateway 420GR,

It took about 3 minutes

coyouth -> RE: WIN 7 is out (10/24/2009 11:45:40 PM)

if you really do want to upgrade, it's best to wait at least 6 months from the day it's released. let others be the guinea pigs first, lol.

Miss Giggles -> RE: WIN 7 is out (10/25/2009 1:02:51 PM)

I ran the tool on my laptop and it popped up right away. My laptop is built for Vista and has enough RAM, etc.. I just have to wait for the Dell Drivers.

I really don't think you need to do that. It has been tested for more than a year on probably hundreds of thousands of computers.

I'm pretty sure it's gone way past the guinea pig stage. You can expect it to be good now.

stellaluna -> RE: WIN 7 is out (10/25/2009 2:29:08 PM)

According to PC Magazine:
quote:

Windows Vista Users -- If you have survived this long with Windows Vista, you may be in no hurry to upgrade. People who like Vista may actually consider Windows 7 a step backwards in some regards.

I like Vista. I've never had a single compatibility problem and it runs perfectly fine on my machine. I'll likely stick with it indefinitely.

Miss Giggles -> RE: WIN 7 is out (10/25/2009 2:38:27 PM)

Yeah I am not rushing either. Businesses are still using XP. It might be a while for them to switch to Windows 7. A lot of them are still using Office 2003 too.

The government, well.. they are still on XP for several more years. LOL. There might be some windows 2000 machines hanging around at a few smaller offices.

Not too long ago we upgraded from NT 4.0......

jhuperetes -> RE: WIN 7 is out (10/26/2009 1:07:19 PM)

I thought it was Win for WG 3.11 from Win 3.1...

potter22 -> RE: WIN 7 is out (11/18/2009 4:51:40 AM)

I have not used win 7 but My friends told me that it is very good as compare to vista

DaveW -> RE: WIN 7 is out (11/18/2009 6:19:45 AM)

I installed it right after it hit the stores, upgraded from XP. So far, I am reserving judgement. I am not so sure that the power managment is as good, my laptop does not seem to last as long. Still finding my way around everything (slowly) but it seems stable enough.

We'll see.
