We have a history of familial hand tremors in our family. This past year, I've noticed that my hands shake a little more than they used to. I've had 2 head MRI's done for other reasons. There was nothing wrong, so I think that this hand tremor is just the familial tremor problem. The problem is, there is the swine flu epidemic and I'm not considered to be in a high risk group to get the vaccine, so I'm hesitant to make an appointment to see my family doctor about this problem, because I don't want to get swine flu. I figure that when I need to see him again for my physical in January, I'll address the matter then. What do you think I should do about this?

Why would you think you would get the flu just by going to see the doctor? You won't get the flu just because someone else might be in the room with you. The child of a friend of mine had swine flu this week, but neither her nor the rest of the family caught it despite being in the same house every day. If you stay away from sneezing and coughing people and use hand sanitizer before touching your food or face then you should be okay. No guarantees, but you can easily minimize the risks for a short visit to the doctor. You could also try making an appointment first thing in the morning and be out of there before other patients arrive. It would also cut down on your time in the waiting room. As for the tremor -- sorry to hear you are having a problem. If it's worrying you, I think you'd be better off dealing with it than letting it stew. I think the odds of you getting the flu from a quick trip to the doctors is fairly small, and if you're over 30 then you're not as high a risk (as children and pregnant mothers) of getting a bad bout of the flu even if you catch it. All the best.

There could be a variety of reasons why you are noticing tremors in your hands. It could be that you see others in your family have this problem and you're more sensitive to when you hands may tremor for a different reason. I know that meds (either taking or missing) have caused me to develop a tremor in my hands, as can my emotional state. I think if you're going to worry yourself about it, you need to take the risk of swine flu and make the appointment (perhaps do as tacitus suggested and go first thing). Here, there asking that people who think they have swine flu not to go into the surgery, but return home and phone the surgery (or the national helpline) to help prevent it spreading.

Melissa My son had swine flu in August and none of us caught it. My dh and I had what we think was a mild form of it two weeks ago, and my dd didn't catch it (ds would have been immune). If you're concerned, then do what tacitus and agapetos suggested and make an appointment at the very beginning of the surgery time. Whenever I go to the doctor's anyway, even before the swine flu scare, I'd never sit next to anyone, and usually anyway stood at one side, away from everyone else but still able to see the screen which calls us in. It's a precaution that I've always taken.
