I'm interested in knowing... Can anyone give the explanation in detail of what being a martyr for Christ is? Is there more than one example of being a martyr for Christ? PROVIDE SCRIPTURE with your translation..

I'm not 100% sure what you are asking here, but a martyr is someone who is killed for their faith or cause and there have been thousands of examples of this throughout the ages. It is presumed that many of the apostles were martyred for their beliefs as well. As far as the bible is specific about there is Stephen who was stoned to death and the apostle Paul speaking of his past (as Saul) admitted to killing Christ followers ... Acts 22:4-5 "I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison, as also the high priest and all the Council can testify. I even obtained letters from them to their brothers in Damascus, and went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished."

I would venture to say there are millions of martyrs and saints, known and unknown. Their sacrifice is inspirational and humbling. New Advent is a Catholic encyclopedia--the link is to the definition of "Martyr," and attendant scripture references.

'For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward. "If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea.'(Mark 9:41,42) Martyrdom whether it be a smile, a kind word to the ultimate sacrifice death to oneself or in fact counts the same in His absolute 'obedience/service' economy.

You can read Fox's Book of Martyrs about people who died for their faith in Christ in the early days of Christianity. You can read between the lines in the news reports today about places where there used to be a lot of Christians, there was a "civil war" (which means the Christians were being robbed and butchered and some fought back) and now there is a Muslim majority, like East Timor and Nigeria. Or read Richard Wurmbrand's book - he started an organization that's called "Voice of the Martyrs" and you can get this month's current newsletter. All which brings up the important point: people are dying for their faith TODAY. Pray for them... when one part of the Body of Christ hurts, we all hurt. Pray for deliverance, pray for provision, help and needs... and pray for grace to die well if God chooses to not deliver them. Pray for widows and orphaned children. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Wurmbrand I don't know how accurate this it - I've seen wikipedia articles lie through their teeth to make Christians look bad, but this might be okay.

So does anyone have any idea how martyrdom is going to be during the end times? I'm concerned as a Christian when the time comes and they want to take me and my loved ones away to a prison or concentration camp or whatever their evil plans may be; is it still going to be defined as a martyr to not bend over and go with the flow and instead fight and resist these people to protect your family and die for them to preserve their life? All being based on Christian principles. I'm concerned that I DO NOT hear a SINGLE word from ANY church about what a christian should be like during the time of persecution. Especially if they come after you with malicious intent. Does anyone get me?

ORIGINAL: deermousie You can read Fox's Book of Martyrs about people who died for their faith in Christ in the early days of Christianity. It was my understanding that not all the stories in Fox's Book of Martyrs are necessarily true and actual events. I don't know if anyone can confirm or deny that.

What happens, happens - God is with us, don't worry about it.

I forget where I heard this. Maybe Gandhi- "There are thousands of causes worth dying for, but not one worth killing for." Not scripture, but profound nonetheless.

The book of Revelation has this to say about martyrs: And when He broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained; and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, "How long, O Lord, holy and true, wilt Thou refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on earth?" And there was given to each of them a white robe; and they were told that they should rest for a little while longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brethren who were to be killed even as they had been should be completed also. Revelation 6:9-11 What should a Christian be like? Christ who laid down His life. The overcoming life is described this way in Revelation 12:11. And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even to death.
