I was thinking about this thread today when I was out in the cold. I pulled a coat out of the closet that I haven't worn for a while, and thought why did I stop wearing this coat. As soon as I got outside in the cold I remembered it was because the sleeves have sort of bell ends that let the cold rush in. I was freezing. I thought I could sew some socks inside the sleeves to make internal cuffs. Though, I think I'd use matched socks if I do this. But, you could use mismatched socks on your kid's coat that is worn to play in the yard in the snow. Also I thought you could sew the top of a sock to gloves or mittens to make longer, warmer cuffs.

I keep them in a basket for a time and then end up giving them to my girls to create with. They make everything from sock puppets to sock monkeys to bean bags to fingerless gloves. They even managed a pair of legwarmers out of an old pair of holey socks for my youngest to wear for dance. I also use them for cleaning purposes. Blessings, Garsy

I'd worry that something would happen and I'd land in the ER with mismatched socks, though I expect the ER staff has seen worse things Just make sure your underwear is clean or they'll gossip all day long. When I worked in a hospital I often ate lunch with friends who worked in the ER. There was one day when they were gossiping about a patient's underwear. The woman had multiple injuries in a serious car accident, including a broken leg. She wasn't upset about her injuries though. She was wearing a new leopard print girdle, and was having a fit because they had to cut it off her. She was screaming that she was going to sue. I was curious if the workers in the ER actually gossip often about the patients?

If they are both the same color and of the same length, I will wear them under my jeans. Afterall, who is going to know that they are not the same other than myself?

Just recently I have discovered a use for socks that are no longer good enough for their intended use or that definitely have no mate. I cut the feet off and use the rest as a sleeve for glass canning jars or glass bottles etc when I'm transporting them. I do that for my ice tea glasses in the summer. It's too dry in the winter to need it. I only use socks with holes though. I just hang onto them. I've had socks in the sock box for 3 years or more. I just can't give up. Someday the mate will show up and I'll hate myself for having threw the other.

ORIGINAL: peculiar_lady2 Hubby uses them on the end of the fishing poles so that everything stays neat and orderly and the lines don't get tangled when in the closet. (He got that idea from my mom)...My mom teaches little kids and has a lot of toys for her classes. One of her games is magnetic things that the kids pick up with a "fishing pole" with a washer attached to it (the pieces on the floor have a magnet strip on them). She uses my old mismatched baby socks to cover the ends so that they don't get all tangled up when being stored. Socks work great for dusting...the kids can put them on their hands and dust away!!! They especially work great for dusting the tops of the fan blades on a ceiling fan. They work great for ice packs. Any injuries, you can grab a zip top baggie, put some ice in it, then put it in a sock. It it's a long sock and a little kids arm or leg, you can "tie" the sock around so that it stays. My Grandpa puts a tennis ball in it and ties it into a knot, then the dog can play with it and it is easier to get away from the dig then just the tennis ball on it's own. You're mention of baby socks stirred a memory for me. I recall using baby socks or just kid socks for packing and storing my colleciton of marbles as a kid. Totally forgot that hadn't thought about that in eons. Nice memory. Thanks.

Socks are great dust rags. I polish my shoes with them. use them as little bags to carry things - you can even tie them to your belt. They're great for staining tea. (The last one was a little joke....)

(The last one was a little joke....) I recall some western film way back, could be a John Wayne wester, were one of the characters was using socks for a tea back or for coffee.. one or the other. Just goes to show you nothing is probably an original idea. Ha. dogonnit though now I am going to keep thinking all day about what movie that was in.

ORIGINAL: peculiar_lady2 lol...my brothers stored their marbles in socks too. I never actually played marbles as a game I just thought they were pretty and sometimes I would trade marbles with other kids. I remember when I discovered how to crackle them. You held a marble with pliers in a gas flame over the stove. Then when it was just hot enough you dropped it into a glass of ice cold water. It was an art form to get it just the right. If the temperature was too hot and it broke apart, just right and they looked really cool - especially when you held it up to the sun. Ah memories.

This thread has got me thinking. DH is always wearing holes in his socks (probably because he buys cheapo tube socks). Next time he gets a hole I'll hang onto the sock and use it to dust the blinds. quote:
Socks are larval coat hangers. Pretty soon you'll have only mismatched socks and a closet full of coat hangers that you don't know how you got. It's one of those scientific mysteries Nova hasn't covered yet. That doesn't seem quite right. My hangers are always disappearing; maybe because I haven't lost a sock in the two years since I moved to a house. Probably because a house is harder to escape in than a communal laundry room in an apartment building.

We don't have this problem, I buy us all the same basic socks :p DH gets basic black tube socks, basic white ones, basic black dress socks, etc... So they might get holes but we rarely have mismatched socks.

I like to wear just socks around the house, no shoes. But, socks wear out much faster when I do that. So, inspired by this thread, I wore a pair of mismatched socks when I was home alone this week. That worked out just fine, and I didn't feel bad about it when one of them got a hole in the heel.

Now that we've come up with all these ideas for one sock, what do you do with one earring? I just cleaned out my jewelry box, and I found a lot of orphaned earrings.
