I'm not too sure if this is where it belongs, but I suppose publishing a book would be considered part of a career? Does anyone have any recommendations on where to start if one were interested in getting something published? I'm not saying I would ever have the courage to actually pursue this, but someday I might decide to. How would I go about doing so? What are the first steps? How do I know that who I send my work to won't steal anything? Does it cost money? These might seem like silly questions, but I honestly don't know, and I'd like to! Any help you can offer would be appreciated! Thank you! Sara

The first thing you do is write the book. Read writing books, study writing tech, read books, write, write, write, learn, learn, learn. Go to writing conferences, study other people's books, hang out on writer's boards like Absolutewrite.com. Ask lots and lots of questions. Bang your head against the wall when you get writer's block. Pray, cry, pray some more. Writing is hard and getting published can be even harder. And don't do this to make money. It will be at least a good 5 years before you see any substancial $$$ for your books. Do it b/c you can't imagine doing anything else, b/c you'll die if you can't write. B/c writing means more to you than breathing air. If you had the choice to not breath as opposed to never writing again, you pick breathing. And you never quit your day job until you have a good following. Kim kimkouski.com quote:

Thank you! :-) I joined a creative writing club at my library ( it starts Monday woo hoo!) and I signed up for NanoWriMo yesterday. I'm looking forward to November! I will check out that site you said soon. Sara

That club will really help you. Be very open to advice and see criticism as a step to being published. Avoid getting offended, and trust you will be offended, so watch for it when someone tells you how to fix the story. As long as you stay open to advice, don't give up, and work hard, you will one day be published.

I forgot this in my frenzy to fix my heart so it would fit the box I was supposed to be stepping out of but really am supposed to be in (and yes I ended that run-on sentence with a preposition). I am going back to Emily Dickinson mode. I am going to write what I WRITE...and if no one sees it until they open a big cedar chest after I am dead, so be it.
