My husband and I are raising pole beans for the first time. We built
3 tripod type poles that are about eight feet tall. The beans have grown
far beyond the poles, intertwined and now are so heavy they are leaning and almost off the raised bed and on the ground.

Obviously being novices, we goofed somewhere along the line. Now the
beans are coming on fast and furious and we need to support our supports.

Any ideas?

It is no sin to limit the growth of the vines. In other words, snip the newer growth back to a workable size. Unless, of course there are lots of baby beans you want to mature. But sometimes you have to be a little ruthless. The beans will continue to produce as long as you keep them picked so you are not dependent on the new growth for your beans.

Same holds true for cucumbers, squash and pumpkins. In fact the bigger veggies would benefit from limiting the vines. New baby ones don't have time to mature anyway in our northern climates so no sense to waste the energy that would mature the other ones sooner and possibly make them bigger.

Thank you. I guess I can do that in the future. But it has already gotten out of hand and the poles are too weak from the weight of all the growth. Do I need to erect a fence beside my poles now? Or are you saying to stand them back up, cut off the excess, and let them continue to mature?

A fence would work

What I did w/those beans which I don't grow anymore for the problems you are having was to buy those long bamboo poles and tie them to those. I use them for lots of things like my peas and my beans which grow but not as tall as pole beans. I use twist ties for tying up the beans and peas to the poles. They worked just fine for me.

Yes, we have poles that are 7-8 ft high. I just didn't know to nip the vines off and stop the crazy growing habit!

Anyway, now we need to find a remedy. Thanks for your help.

Wow! I'm only 4'6" tall! I'd need a ladder to pick anything from your garden! LOL Good luck with them. You will have lots of beans to enjoy all year.

That's absolutely true! I told my husband the same. I do need a ladder to reach to the top! And I'm a foot taller than you. (They are in a raised bed. )

Yikes! I missed that raised bed part the first time I read this. Wow.

Obviously it's hard to give concrete advice not being able to actually see what is going on. But I'm still thinking of trimming a good bit of the growth and setting up the poles if you can do it without actually breaking the main stems. Be sure, of course that you save parts that are producing. If you keep the beans picked and keep the plants healthy they will want to produce. How many beans do you actually want? Are you giving lots away or canning everything you can get your hands on?

I had to learn that I didn't have to can EVERYTHING. I now estimate how many jars I'm actually going to need for a year, adding a few in case of a bad year next year, and give lots of fresh veggies away.

Another thought is that you may be growing too many plants. I'd think 3 plants per teepee and no more than six if your not sure they'll grow alright. Maybe you have too many plants and they have nowhere to go. I don't recall personally having pole beans so overgrown. (but my memory could be faulty ) I now grow purple bush beans. They too produce very well if I keep them picked.
