Tendon pain - 9/2/2010 7:13:11 PM

I am self diagnosing the pain in the top of my big toe/foot as extensor tendonitis/pain.
Yes I will go to the doctor if I need to. There is NO visible injury/swelling/redness, just pain.

Do any of you know ways to self-treat this?
I tried searching the internet. Read about stretching the calf muscle.
Read about ice and rest. I have no swelling, but cold hurts. I am already at rest except for walking.
I went to the store trying to find splints/braces. They didn't have anything for the toe/foot, only for the ankle.

Has anyone had arch problems leading to the tendon pain. I think my arches are low. Hard to tell.
I am considering trying the Dr Scholls shoe inserts, recommended by the Dr Scholls machine.

Any advice? Thanks

What led up to the pain? Are you taking ibuprofen or another anti-inflammatory?

The pain kind of creeped up on me, gradually. My mom says it's cause I'm old (turning 33 soon).
I don't take pain medication. I'm not sure that a swallowed pill would know to go all the way to my toe.
I have used aspercreme (asprin creme), it worked a little when the pain was less often and less severe.
That leg is shorter than the other one. I try to step carefully, but fairly quickly there is the pain again.

When you say the pain crept up gradually, what were the circumstances? Are you an athlete? Were you wearing ill-fitting shoes?

You probably aren't going to get good relief for the pain without taking an anti-inflammatory. Sometimes the injury itself is nothing more than inflammation that can be greatly improved by taking the medication. Ibuprofen works best for me, but some people take naproxen sodium (Aleve) with better results. You probably need to take a regular dose for a couple of days, though, to get the benefit. I'm not a doctor, but when I get injuries that appear to involve tendons/ligaments, I will take 1200mg a couple of times a day. Sometimes I just need one dose. I was told to do this by an orthopedic surgeon for a injury I had a few years back and it continues to be the first thing I do, in addition to ice and compression. You can use a regular ACE bandage for compression.

There were no circumstances, unless I am walking wrong somehow.
Not an athlete, just shop alot.
I wear nice kswiss tennis shoes. Plenty of toe room.

I'm only asking because even if you manage to alleviate the pain, you'll also need to alleviate the cause.

Can't stop walking, unless I got a brace/cast/splint and crutches.
Don't want to go that far.
I am trying to alter the way I walk, and looking for brace/splint potentially for at night to help.
And advice about what else I could do.

I have a doctor appointment for something else in November, if the pain is still there then I will tell him.
Right now my arch hurts as well. I'm wondering if this is the problem spreading.
I will likely try some kind of arch support next, since there are plenty of those to chose from at the store.
I'm hoping it will not cause new problems.

Why not go to the doctor and find out what is actually wrong? Why hobble around in pain trying not to step wrong when you could just go to the doctor and get a real diagnosis and treatment that will actually help?

you are not old

I agree with going to the foot doctor. Wait too long and you will be on crutches

Tendinitis is not a disease so to speak, but only a symptom of something going wrong with bio-mechanics.

You might be prone to inflammation due to diet or chemical influences of the body. Amazing what a good dose of weed killer will do.... Or it might be one of the arthritis forms starting to manifest.

You might be prone to foot issues due to mechanics of the foot and lower leg. This could be as simple as falling arches, easy to see -- harder to fix. It could be pronation, supination, tightening hamstrings, lumbar lordosis changes, muscle imbalances from habit or activities. it could be

The principle of self treating is great.... if you are an expert. As a doctor, I do not even treat myself, too many likelihoods of deciding what I want, vs. what I need. Find a great sports oriented physical specialist.

This could be an orthopedist, Physical therapist, in some states -- Podiatrist. I have even heard of some people getting relief from Chiropractors for these conditions.

Seek out professional help.
