I assume Jesus is offering living water but wonder why you have the crown of thorns still on His head.

Christ is showing us what He called us to do ~ give to the thirsty; both physically as well as spiritually.

That's my take on it...

What comes to my mind is "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me"

he went through the punishment for our sins. in order for us to recieve the living water we must receive him and his birth and his death and his resurection. we are healed by his stripes and cleansed by his blood and he fills us with the living water when we accept him.

Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters. . .

That's what I hear kisstheson. LL

(The scripture is from Isaiah 55:1.)

wonderful thoughts everyone!

here's what I had in mind when I did this picture. It's based on the John 19:28 where Jesus says, "I thirst!" This is the reason why Jesus appears as He did during the Passion as the memory of what He suffered is always with Him. He humbly holds out a wooden cup asking that we put our love in that cup. He knows our love is very little and that is why the cup is small. Wood is symbolic of humanity and humility, humility because it's not a elaborate jeweled chalice Jesus asks us to fill, humanity because Christ became human for us!

Do you believe Christ thirsts for your love? What are some ways you can pour love into His cup?

Interesting thoughts, kts. I'm not sure about Christ 'thirsting' for my love. Thirst implies need and thirst is a survival need. So I would not say He 'thirsts' for my love. His desire is for my love. He longs for my love. But that is because my love for Him and to Him is what is best for me, good for my soul. Christ is the needless One.

But I also don't want to discourage you and what was your inspiration for this picture. Perhaps in that moment He was holding a cup to you and you heard the words 'I thirst'. And you responded with love. Now that is beautiful and surely what He desires. Bless ya!

Your work is very good. I love the subject. If I may offer constructive criticism - this sketch would be much more powerful if Jesus was shown offering the cup to the viewer. I know this would be a much harder sketch to produce but it looks to me like you are up to it!! Keep up the great work and keep posting your drawings.

While the piece itself is lovely and I appreciate the sentiment, I believe your use of John 19:28 for the work is a personal interpretation that is not in accordance with the actual meaning or intent of the verses in their entirety:

28"Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit."

So, I think on closer inspection you have to agree that it really had nothing to do with Christ thirsting for our love.

When an artist puts up his/her work for public viewing, they should know that they will receive a variety of feedback...some positive - some negative, some good - some bad - some mediocre. It seems like every time you have put up a piece of your work you always seem to get hurt by the comments. In all sincerity, I would suggest that if an artist is too sensitive to receive all types of input, it would be better for them not to show it.

The artist is not hurt because people dislike her work. It matters not. she's been an artist for over thirty years and is used to all kinds of critiquing both postive and negative. what she is hurt by is a misundertanding of Jesus' longing to be loved and why it's so hard for people to grasp that He might actually appreciate a little love poured in that empty cup of His. Why is that this scripture is only regarded superficially, that He thirsted for water only? He longed to embrace Jerusalem "under His wings," how is it Christ can't thirst for souls? Isn't that why He died?

kts,
I was reading in Thomas Merton's, No Man is an Island, today. He shared some thoughts regarding art and our spiritual lives and I thought of you as I read his thoughts.

He said that if art causes us to transcend ourselves and connect with the Lord, it has accomplished that for which it is purposed. (That is my paraphrase of his thought.)

I thought that helpful and I wanted to share it with you. So instead of our having to 'think the same thought' and 'connect in the same way' such as the way you did and the meaning it had for you, this gives art a broader and greater purpose. . . to lead others to relationship with Jesus.

That takes the burden off of you and puts it on the Holy Spirit and our response.:) You offer your art because it moved you. The rest is out of your hands.

Anyway, just wanted to encourage you to continue to share what the Lord shares with you. LL

Thanks! I really appreciate your encouragement. seriously. But I still feel sad because I feel that people are still missing something about Jesus. the bottom line is I just want Him to be loved.

How come Christians don't believe Jesus longs for our love? isn't longing like thirst? I don't understand this.

Oh, I know your longing, kts. Yes, you are absolutely correct in that there are too few who truly love Jesus. We are to love with ALL of our heart, soul and might. Yet I know I fall far short of that kind of love.

As I said before in my original response:

quote:

Interesting thoughts, kts. I'm not sure about Christ 'thirsting' for my love. Thirst implies need and thirst is a survival need. So I would not say He 'thirsts' for my love. His desire is for my love. He longs for my love. But that is because my love for Him and to Him is what is best for me, good for my soul. Christ is the needless One.

I think it is presenting it as His 'need' which thirst implies which is the troublesome point. Jesus certainly longs for our love. And He certainly does hold out His cup to all, desiring that all be saved and come to the knowledge of His wonderful salvation.

Jesus' longing is not rooted in His need but ours and that is a distinct and important difference. As I reread your OP, your description of your art is beautiful. It was this question that I responded to.

quote:

Do you believe Christ thirsts for your love?

But the image of Jesus humbly offering Himself and the use of the wooden cup is especially beautiful. Blessings, LL

Thanks for all your positive comments and for taking the time to show me some lovin'. You have done this on more than one occasion.

I'm just not seeing the above quote in the same way. I think it is precisely BECAUSE of our need that Jesus needs for us to embrace Him so that we can know what true love is. He thirsts to save us. There is no way He could have endured all He did for us unless He had an incredible passion and thirst for us. That's why His whole soul and heart and even the last drop of His blood was offered on the cross. It wasn't a heartless deed...sort of like, "I need to show you My love."
